Clutch Pedal Spring - Substitutes?

Recommended Posts

Clutch pedal spring on my 87 414 broke just after blowing the snow off the driveway on Saturday (glad not before :) ).

The part is still listed on Partstree, but the idea of paying twice as much in shipping for the part got me wondering if anyone had the spec on what that spring should be, and if I could get it from a hardware or auto-parts place. I searched on the forums, but did not find anything.

Any ideas? anyone have a spec on this spring? Mine broke and I am missing a couple of pieces, or I would just bring it in and get one like it.

(it is not like this is a huge amt of $$ I realize, but I am more interested in having it working for the snow we are supposed to get thursday, instead of having to wait for it to come in the mail.. )

They have an assortment of springs at ACE Hardware, Home Depot, and Tractor Supply...you may be able to match something up and the price is right. Take all the pieces with you if you still have them. :) I was able to match one up for my 502.

Have you tried your local Toro dealer? I have always managed to buy one off the shelf there, never had to have them get one in for me.

I buy as much as possible from my local dealer. Their prices are only a little above the online prices, But with not having to pay shipping it is pretty much the same.

And I'd like them to stay in business, and to continue to carry parts for my tractors.

FWIW, many dealers will get a part for you with no shipping if you will wait a few days for a normal delivery.

I too like to use Toro if I can, because Mike is right, we want to keep them in business. I only mention the other places, because I know a lot of the members are not that close to a dealer and may not want to wait to have a piece ordered. It seems my Toro dealer has to order everything for my early Wheel Horses and it takes at least 2 days. I hope they do not go out of business because I bought a spring or a wood ruff key from Tractor Supply...we want to keep these guys in business also. :bow-blue:

Sorry, I do not have a spec on this spring. If you have the part number you can try plugging it in this site and see if it is still available...

I did the same... still working fine after 2 years, we've had good success with replacement springs too.

Well the toro dealer is so swamped repairing snowblowers that it is impossible to get his attention. So I went to the hardware store and bought a generic spring. It seems to work ok , not as much tension as the one I took off. I don't know if the replacement parts come this way, but the one I took off has a very neat and complete red paint job, so it is possible it was the original spring. I guess 26 years is about all you can expect.

The good news is that in my search for the correct replacement , I came across a guy with a power equipment repair business, who used to be a wheel horse dealer, so I now have another source who might be a bit more knowledgable than the local toro guy. Although he also confirmed that i need to rebuild the carb on my ariens walk behind .

Not to hijack the thread, but what are the symptoms in your Ariens walk-behind? Mine is starting to hunt when it's not under load. ('99 STX24) Or we could move this to PM?

Thanks!
