C160 Hydro no brakes

Recommended Posts

Jman7290

Just picked up a 74 C160 and the brake don't even slow it down. The pedal goes all the way down with ease. Any ideas or tips before I tear into it!

No brakes on the hydro. When the pedal is pushed, It should move the hydro forward/reverse control to the neutral position. If the hydro is good, it should prevent the tractor from moving. There is a parking brake that is engaged when the TEE handled hydro on/off lever is pulled up.

All that pedal does is flip the motion lever into neutral. The hydro itself will brake with it's fluid dynamics.

:WRS:

The pedal only returns the direction control lever to the neutral position. (there is no actual friction-type brake) Moving the DCL with your hand accomplishes the same function.

You'll need to remove the cover plate above the DCL and look for damage, missing pieces, etc.

Thanks guys any info is helpful, I am new to the Hydro's! Is there an adjustment that will send it back to neutral in the right position. It goes forward and backward perfectly, just hard to get to a neutral position.

Do you have an owners manual for that C-160? The adjustment is on page 15. If you don't, you can download the manual from our manual section.

Do you have this problem in both forward and reverce? Also, is motion in both directions strong, if not you may have to replace the acceration valve springs. If the springs in one direction are week the other valve will overcome the week one and you will not have the dynamic pressure needed to stop the tractor. These springs can be replaced without a rebuild and cost about $ 40.00.

Good luck and keep warm! :flags-usa:

JMAN, FYI, do not use the parking brake to stop the tractor. If you pull the parking brake lever up while the tractor is moving, you will break the pawl that mechanically locks the hydro tranny. If the parking brake does not work, the PO (previous owner) has probably allready broken it.

Thanks for the help, I do have a manual and I will check it. How hard is it to replace those four springs and any tips. Also how to I get it to a neutral when it is not running so I can push it. My father in laws craftsman has a little lever on it you pull or push so you can free wheel it so to speak. I could not push the C160 with the brake off when I tried.

Its a pesky regular screw head bolt on the lower left side ( as your sitting on it) between the fender pan and the trans. IF it hasn't been used in a while, its most likely froze up. If thats the case you need to PB balster it for a bit then remove the rear tire and get hold of it with a pair of vise grips and work it SLOWLY loose. 1 full turn will be all it needs.

The springs desciption will be in the Sunstrand/ Eaton trans manual. You will need to remove the fender pan and rear tire for access. They are also on the left side of the trans in the valve body.

If them are bad let me know and I can hook you up with some repo's as they are NLA from Toro.

Thanks a million guys, I did the adjustment and it works perfectly now. I did see how to free push it when it's not running written on the lower rear fender while I was working on it. Now I got to get my snow blower, chains and wheel weights on her and she will be ready for some snow!
