Tecumseh h40 to h60 conversion??

Recommended Posts

SousaKerry

Ok so i picked up a little Lawn Ranger this weekend got it home and crap some a-hole swapped out the h60 with an h40. $%#@, oh well at least i have a starting point to go on for now.

So I just happened to pull a hh60 block out of the trash at work a few months back that had a busted cam but they kept all the aluminum parts. So I already know I need a piston rod and such but will the aluminum external parts from an H40 fit on an HH60 and will the cam shaft work also?

Or should I start looking for a blown H60 to rob a parts from?

Biggest difference i could see in the spec tables was stroke 2.25 H40 2.62 H60.

Camshaft .623 on each. Yo might want to look at the Tecumseh service manual in the files section.

I did look at it but was wondering if anyone had experience with both engines to know if there were any other internal differences

I was wnodering what is interchangeable on these engines lately too. I have an h50 off of a snowblower I fixed fir my sister. It was too tempermental to give to her so I replaced it with an easier starting 5hp briggs. Starts on the second or third pull every time! I do realize that many Wheelhorses used little Tecumseh engines though so I thought I would hang on to it for the time being. Nothing else maybe someday it will be good trade material.

Got the head off today and cleaned things up a bit. Bore is 2.5" dia and 2.25" stroke, So it is definitely an H40. :banghead:*****.gif

Will the old head gasket match up to the HH60 block?

Ok so I stayed after work tonight to tear down the H40. Here are some pictures. In the fiorst shot I had a littloe bit of trouble getting off the drive pulley as you can see I had to get out big bertha not much stops her.

Once I got everything apart I found that the governer gear was missing about half the teeth..

The cranks are quite a bit different the one that came from the HH-50?? is shorter has the shaft turned down and the flywheel end is completely different. Cam shaft appears the same and will be transfered the aluminum end plate fits but I am starting to think that what I thought was a hh60 is really a hh50 as the stroke seems to be the same as the h40.

So either I make an adapter for the crank and live with it being 1 HP short, or I keep looking for another crank or engine....

If I remember correctly, doesnt the HH60 have a roller bearing on the PTO end of the crank? (I know the H60 just has a bush in the housing).

I have never seen an H40. I do have some shots comparing an HH60 to an H60 id thats any use to you. I seem to remember that there was a slight difference in the crankshafts as well.

EDIT: Oops just read your post more carefully. Sorry I know nothing about HH50's either!!

Good news the crank is for a HH60 stroke is 2.5" checked with a height gauge during lunch today. :greetings-clappingyellow::handgestures-thumbupright:

Now to design an adapter sleeve to get the full 1" shaft diameter I need :confusion-scratchheadblue: yeah that just sounds wrong.....

oh and sorekiwi the HH block I have is a bushing no bearings.

Well more setbacks and headaches abound during this little project.....

Got most of my new parts in and go to put my new rings on my new piston and dang it if I didn't snap the oil ring in half :banghead: :*****:

Still looking for the right flywheel with electric start and charging magnets, with the older style larger taper. Newer ones taper from about 3/4-1/2" approxamatly

the one I need tapers from 7/8-5/8" approximately..

Modified my crank by welding on a sleeve to increase the shaft size from 3/4" to 1" still need to do a little filing at the transition point as there is a .004" step. That's what I get for not indicating in my stock in the lathe :confusion-scratchheadblue:

This is the only style flywheel I could find with the correct taper

post-5271-0-38130000-1360438729.jpg

It uses this ignition which your block is set up for.

You may be able to find magnets that can be glued in for charging.

Well I finally located all the parts got a flywheel from an H70 off ebay that will work, still not sure why this particular HH-60 block had a crank and journals from an H-70.

Just about ready to take the old girl home to give it a test fire,

Here are some pics of the final product, got a few things to do yet, mainly governor linkage and throttle cable setup.
