The plan is to get the mower up to scratch and fully working order as a Mower for the old man (still need to find a mower deck!)

I would be very grateful for any info.

Cheers, James

Hi James, 211-3 look's like was produced 85-86, but I can't match your Model number. Nearest I can find reads - 22-11B301 (1985) & 22-11B302 (86)?.

.................Maybe someone more familiar with this Model will be along to help you,

Regards

Can't read the model number. Looks like B2-11B303 or 32-11B303. Neither show up. Perhaps the numbers off the engine will help.

Strange can

I get that model number to match up exactly either. It may be easier to date it based on the numbers from the engine. This tractor should have the manual clutch for the PTO, they can be a little finicky, as far as decks go they either came with a 37" 2 bladed deck or a 42" rear discharge 3 blade. Some of the older ones coud have had a 36" 3 blade deck. The 37" is a good cutting deck and can be outfitted with a bagger without the need of an external blower unit.

Unfortunately the vertical shaft tractors use a different deck attachment system and there are far fewer of them around, at least here in the US anyways. The one big drawback on these tractors is the peerless transmission, not much good for anything other then cutting grass on the level if you have steep hills it will tear them up, believe me I found that out the hard way.

Welcome to the forum James.

I suspect the model number doesn't match theose given on the Toro site as it was an export spec for Europe. But try using the numbers that Richard's come up with.

Assuming the gearbox / transaxle is working that's a nice little first project to have a go at. Vertical shaft machines aren't popular but I have two in my stable and they work very hard.

These use a different deck to the horizontal shaft machines so take care when sourcing one - they do come up. They were found on 200 series tractors and the earlier B- series 'black hoods' I think.

I scrapped a 210 - 4 last year that was bought for spares, not the same model but a similar size so I may have some bits if you need them.

welcome!

it's the modern (well a bit) equivalent of a B-111 or B-115. Circa 1985... Toro dropped the A/B/C prefix

try B2-11B301 which is a close equivalent on toro partfinder :D

Briggs serial number should help date at least the engine i.e. 252707-xxxx-xx

Here is a list of Mower Decks that should fit your 211-3 Tractor. Finding one will be a challenge, as very few sellers know what fits what Tractor, but at least you can ask for the Model number to check it.

05-32SB06 32" Side Discharge Mower

05-36XR05 36" Rear Discharge Mower

05-37MS06 37" Side Discharge Mower

05-42SB05 42" Side Discharge Mower

05-42XR06 42" Rear Discharge Mower

Hi James, Well I think Chris is your 'End of the Rainbow Pot of Gold'. I've been doing some digging for you and Chris' Deck is a 1980 model and is the predecessor of the Model number 5-42XR06.

The deck that Chris has was fitted to either B-112, B-115 and B165 Twin. All had B&S Vertical shafts.

Toro Partsviewer ( https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/index.cfm?xCaller=Toro&lang=us_en ) shows all the same basic design and components for both 1980 and 1986 deck models.

All you need to do now is check with the IPLs (Illustrated Parts List) on Toro's site and match your Tractor's physical appearance and fittings using the Tractor Model numbers I gave in the earlier post.

If they match up well and you have all the Attachment lift parts on your Tractor, you will then know what you have or if you are missing anything to fit the Deck.

You will then also have all the Drive Belt (Toro) part numbers you may need, and we can then find the correct Aftermarket sizes if you prefer them.

Hope this Helps and keep us posted on your progress.

Well done Chris, I think you may have made James a happy man.

Working on the principle that photos are supposidly worth lots of words here's some info on vertical shaft tractors and decks.

First the front mount on my 216-5

vsmount1.jpg

I've checked and it's the same on my 227-5 and on a B-165 being dismantled. The big pin that secures the deck is often stored with the deck and may not be on the tractor.

Here's the rear mount that is raised and lowered by the implement lift lever on the tractor.

vsmount2.jpg

Decks very often no longer have their id labels or they have been painted over but once you're familiar with the mounting system it's easy to spot a deck that will fit vertical shaft WHs.

First a 36" rear discharge deck that I passed on - it was completely rotten.

vsdeck1.jpg

Note the peg at the rear - this engages into the lift mechanism. This example has the front mounting pin stored with the deck.

The next pic shows the 42" rear discharge deck I did 'win' - it's to go with the 216 to make it 'complete' again though in reality the tractor is used to pull loads not mow.

vsdeck2.jpg

Not a shining example but solid and a good project for one day.

The rear mounting peg should have a plastic sleeve on it - its been lost from this one hence the piece of garden hose the PO added.

It's also worth noting the raised pulley which is very distintive on these decks - just a short belt drives this from the engine shaft / pto clutch pulley assembly.

Hope this helps anyone looking for a deck for vertical shaft horses.

BTW I checked the number on the deck on my 227-5 its a 42" rear discharge E542XR01

Keys are easy, most all lawnmower keys are the same.

Keys as in to turn the ignition on? If so I get mine from the local graden machinery place - they're kind of universal on older machines so they usually stock an aftermarket product.
