JC 1965 1,530 #1 Posted January 21, 2013 Lost the steel ball from the front of a carter #26 carb. It fits just behind the choke shaft. I guess the choke shaft pivots on it. I forgot it was there and when i removed the choke shaft it went flying. Does anyone know the size or part # or where i can find one ? Any help appreciated. :hide:
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #2 Posted January 21, 2013 The choke shaft detent ball for the Carter N carb is 1/8" in diameter. (Kohler # 25 194 02-S) Don't forget that there's also a friction spring in there behind the ball. (Kohler # 25 089 06-S)

Anglo Traction 761 #5 Posted January 21, 2013 (edited) My early 70's #26's have 1/8" detent balls in them. I have another (1981) which I'll check to see if it different. Maybe worth checking the size with a Drill bit through the Filter Housing Screw hole ...........Just checked and it is 1/8" Edited January 21, 2013 by Anglo Traction

JC 1965 1,530 #8 Posted January 21, 2013 Thanks Terry, I just saw that you had posted this info. I have checked several hardware stores, the smallest I can find is 5/32 and that's too big. I need the 1/8" Groundhog47 (Gerry) is going to send me one. I will check this place out and probably order some extras. Thank again !! :thumbs2:
tunahead72 2,400 #9 Posted January 21, 2013 "NOTE: If the choke is cable-controlled, then the spring and ball isn't needed." Terry, can you explain? :dunno:
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #10 Posted January 21, 2013 The detent ball and spring holds the choke shaft & plate in the open position. (against the vacuum entering the carb throat) If a control cable is attached to the arm on the choke shaft, the plate cannot unintentionally close.
tunahead72 2,400 #11 Posted January 21, 2013 Okay, that makes sense. So, if Jerry's talking about his C-161, which I believe has a choke cable, he doesn't even really need to replace the ball and spring?
TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #12 Posted January 21, 2013 Technically no - it's entirely up to him.
specialwheelhorse 174 #13 Posted January 21, 2013 A good reason to keep all old bearings and take the balls out of them and just keep a bunch in pill bottles and such. just never know what you might need them for.But don't put them where you will not loose them or you will never find them again.

Jim you are correct, if you saw any uv them jars (little) behind Dee's head, that was my bigger stash, but am not sure if little stash was there or moved. They have always been handy for somethin'. I am rebuilding this carb for an engine I am going to use on a lawn vac. ( hopefully ) There will not be a control cable. I will be working the choke by hand. That's why I need the detent ball. :thumbs2:
