Heald Hauler #2

Recommended Posts

Rollerman

So back in November I picked up a Heald Hauler electric I found on Craigslist.

It's been real handy, but has limited power with the 2HP 36volt electric motor.

I put the word out & watched the classifieds hopeing to find another, but with a gas engine.

Bob Rock "whlpny" alerted me of one for sale in MI.

I contacted the seller, made arrangments to drive up for a look & brought home this cherry.

It's a 4-16HH = 4 wheels/16HP Heald Hauler.

It's a project, missing the engine, drive clutch, seat, & some misc parts.

I brought it into my shop & started knocking it down with intentions of rebuild/restoreing it.

Floor board & bulkhead off.

PO had hacked up the frame a little.

He was intending to put a 440 sled engine in it.

I'll repair this after I blast the frame.

Ready for sand blasting.

Little suprises...a member on "OldMiniBike" forum told me to take a look at the trans output shaft.

Sure enough it's cracked from the key way almost into the threads.

I'm hopeing I can get a replacement through Power Tec, a compant that still carries parts for these.

Any body have any sugestions for the hood.

It's buckled pretty good & it's springy enough I can't force the buckle out.

Should I heat it gently with a torch & try to work the buckle out?

It's suposed to be flat where the level is.

Member "Nick" made me a sweet deal on a Briggs I/C 18HP twinn.

This is a little more powerful than the stock engine, should have the same footprint though.

I have almost everything ready to go now parts wise other than the trans output shaft.

More updates to follow.

Cool! I went to Google Images to see what one looked like complete, I definitly like the 4 wheel version better then the 3 wheeler. Watched a video, looked much faster than a garden tractor.

I've seen enough "orange" in my lifetime...orange trucks, orange barrels, orange cones, orange safety vests..... :teasing-slap:

I'm partial to red, Taylor wants to paint it camo or OD green, but seeing how you like green...maybe you should go check out "Weekend Freedom Machines". :ychain:

All the pictures with the exception of the primer gray are bent the same way seemed to be a design flaw. Might be better to provide some angle support under there spot welded to the hood. Then you could toss the hood and build something all together different,

Here is one my neighbor and I build out of some junked lawn tractors.

Here is mine.

Little update...I've been working on sandblasting the frame.

With the 30 degree temps I'm haveing issues with my goggles fogging up & the sandblaster tank sweating, so progress is slow.

I hear 40ies tomorrow so hopeing to get more done.

Here's my Kimball Hauler. Not the best design, but it is perfect in the pecan orchard.

I'd take that clutch apart, even though it looks good, and stretch the spring to a 4" length and grease the ball bearings. Mine didn't engage good, did that now it's perfect. Powertech is my parts source too.

Thanks for the pics "WP205a", those later Kimball Haulers are nice.

I probably won't mess with the drive clutch other than to put it on & see how everyting works first.

The driven clutch will be getting rebuilt.

Not much for updates, waiting on more parts to come in & the cold temps are keeping me out of the shop.

I really miss the woodburner in my old shop.
