Hey guys what's the deal on selecting gear oil weight? I understand the one is thicker but do different wheel horse trannys require different weight? Does it really matter?

I have been using 90 weight in mine. But I have seen alot of people using the 140 as well. I'm interested to see what everyone else says. ~Jake

TT posted a list, but for me I use what ever for the most part, if it's a winter use machine thinner oil, if it's a show tractor they get Mobil 1 gear oil, and will probably never get changed again, if it's going up for sale and I put new oil in it, it gets what ever weight I can get cheap, new clean oil is better than old dirty, water contaminated oil.

I FEEL THE SAME AS KELLY. WHATEVER IS PRICED RIGHT 85-140W or 90W. I RAN A 91 312-8 LAST SUMMER FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR MOWING AND THEN DRAINED THE FLUID. THE LUBE WAS JUST WARM NOT HOT AND IT WAS 85 DEGREES OUT. DOES THE LUBE EVER GET REAL HOT?

Agree 100%. Over the years WH changed its mind about what oil to use even though the basic design of the tranny never really changed. My L-107 has run great for 45 years using 40w motor oil in the tranny, which was the WH recommended back then.
