Kevbo 80 #1 Posted January 6, 2013 Hey guys what's the deal on selecting gear oil weight? I understand the one is thicker but do different wheel horse trannys require different weight? Does it really matter?

Jake Kuhn 1,556 #3 Posted January 6, 2013 I have been using 90 weight in mine. But I have seen alot of people using the 140 as well. I'm interested to see what everyone else says. ~Jake
Kelly 1,029 #4 Posted January 6, 2013 TT posted a list, but for me I use what ever for the most part, if it's a winter use machine thinner oil, if it's a show tractor they get Mobil 1 gear oil, and will probably never get changed again, if it's going up for sale and I put new oil in it, it gets what ever weight I can get cheap, new clean oil is better than old dirty, water contaminated oil. BOWTIE 226 #5 Posted January 7, 2013 I FEEL THE SAME AS KELLY. WHATEVER IS PRICED RIGHT 85-140W or 90W. I RAN A 91 312-8 LAST SUMMER FOR ABOUT 1 HOUR MOWING AND THEN DRAINED THE FLUID. THE LUBE WAS JUST WARM NOT HOT AND IT WAS 85 DEGREES OUT. DOES THE LUBE EVER GET REAL HOT? BOWTIE IN OHIO

Agree 100%. Over the years WH changed its mind about what oil to use even though the basic design of the tranny never really changed. My L-107 has run great for 45 years using 40w motor oil in the tranny, which was the WH recommended back then.
