3609horse 27 #1 Posted January 1, 2013 I recently got a C120 with what I was told was a 16hp installed. The tins said 16. The engine runs fine but when I use it with my single stage snow blower it only throws the snow about 10ft if I'm lucky then it about dies if I don't keep the speed right. The snow was dry and fluffy and the engine seems to be at full rpm's. How can I tell what motor is really in this. I think its more a 10hp than a 16hp. I ran another 10hp tractor and did about the same thing, thats what leads me to think its a 10. Also I used my twin 16 and it really throws snow. Is there any markings on the block to look for, thanks for the help. Gene....
joel_400 59 #2 Posted January 1, 2013 Look for k341 on the pto end of the block, ten head bolts, and bigger exhaust port...1 1/4 pipe instead of 1 inch. Joel
Martin 2,133 #3 Posted January 1, 2013 (edited) well the most noticable difference between the 16 and the 10-14 hp kohlers is the head bolt pattern.... the 16hp or k341 has an extra head bolt.... so if you only have 9 bolts holding on the head you know for sure that you dont have a 16 hp engine. i think most if not all have larger exhaust port as well..... looks like you beat me to it joel Edited January 1, 2013 by Martin
Wishin4a416 2,191 #4 Posted January 1, 2013 I cant answer your question on how to tell the 10-14 horse motors but I did learn here that the 16 Horse has 10 Head bolts rather than 9 like the others. When I picked up a 160 last Friday, thats the first thing I checked was for 10 head bolts. Im sure someone here will know. The only way I would know would be by pulling the head and measuring the bore.
Wheel-N-It 2,969 #5 Posted January 1, 2013 You are good to go on the identification Jack. If you have 10 head bolts then its a 16 for sure. Two things I would check are the points gap, make sure the gap is set at .020 This basically ensures the timing is correct. Pull the carb and compare it against one fron a 12 or 14hp Kohler. The 16hp carb is a bit larger to give the gas necessary to produce 16hp. The K341 will run fine with a smaller carb but it will not produce maximum horsepower. This may not be the problem but if if your engine has good compression, then these two things should be verified before you start taking the engine apart. Also don't forget to check the air filter! 3609horse 27 #6 Posted January 1, 2013 Thank you all for the advice. I went out and checked and only have 9 head bolts. Now I know its not a 16 kinda makes me feel better knowing its doing all it can do just not enough hp. Again thanks to all that responded. Now it will be a plow tractor and let the blower go to a larger hp tractor. Hope everybody had a safe holiday, thanks. Gene...
Sparky-(Admin) 21,550 #7 Posted January 1, 2013 Now I know its not a 16 kinda makes me feel better Aren't you at all agravated that the seller misled you on the motor ? Maybe a phone call to see if he wants to kick a couple bucks back your way? I mean a 16hp Kohler "K" is worth way more than a 10 or 12hp Kohler "K". Mike............ But on the other hand, I'd also be a little PO'd at myself for not checking before buying. Sent from my MB520 using Tapatalk

Well I know it was not intentional. He took the motor off a C161 . I knew it was not an original wheel horse Kohler because the front cover had studs for a gas tank mount, and knowing what I know now it won't happen again, lol. Not thrilled its not a 16 but happy that it is not a worn out 16 also. I didn't pay alot for the tractor and when I took it off the trailer the balance gears started making noise so they had to come out before I ran it. So as long as it runs and drives I guess I can't complain. Gene...
