Michigan Seats - Lets See Some Pics!

Recommended Posts

Horse Play

I want to get a new seat so I don't destroy my original. The Michigan seats seem to have great reviews plus there made in the USA. I couldn't find any pics of them on any Wheel Horses, so I was hoping for some help. I'm looking at the V250 or V3500.

Michigan seats used to be OEM seats for Toro Wheel Horse and I think even when it was just Wheel Horse. I have always used Michigan Seats for replacement. Just recently I had to get a new seat and I could not find a Michigan Seat with the old bolt pattern I checked several different suppliers and kept coming up with the same result. If they are out there I sure can't find them. I ended up getting a Michigan Seat but had to make a adapter plate.

A high back and low back seat, steel pan, available at Tractor Supply.

All kinds of bolt patterns on the bottom of the steel pan. Purchased the high back seat, excellent. Bolt pattern matched the 400's and I am sure more. Even so, easy enough to drill new holes with the cover and foam removed. Read on!

Picked up a 2nd high back, same seat, at the junkie. $5.00.

What I like is the removable cover. The used seat, I pealed off the cover.

Took out the foam. Cleaned and high gloss black rattle can the steel pan.

Spray adhesive, reinstalled the foam. Then, get this, more gloss black RustOleum painted the covering. Put chassis grease on the new bolts. I had to saw the old bolts on the really, really, weathered WH seats. Both look like new. (Link below is to the low back).

New seat, left, 416. Old painted, 414 on the right.

They use to make a high back in the same style. This is the only picture I have of it. Wish they still made it.

Michigan Seat Company was the OEM for the seat on my 416-8. The seat has a few cracks in it, and I'd like to replace it. I probably will next year. Right now I'm a little undecided on what to purchase for a replacement.

BTW, you guys have posted some really good pics here.

THE MICHIGAN SEAT COMPANY WAS SOLD TO JASON'S MILSCO MANUFACTURING IN WISCONSIN IN 2006. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY MAKE THAT DESIGN ANYMORE OR THE CORRECT 7 1/2" X 7" BOLT PATTERN ON THE PAN.

BOWTIE is right they were sold and they have discontinued the popular high back that a lot of people were using as a replacement. They did come out with some other high back that are very nice just not the right bolt pattern. That's why I had to make a adapter plate. I wonder if it is connected to Toro dropping the classic.

Well, not good news about the high back seat. This summer I replaced the seat on my 312. I had a set of seat sliders and the hinged seat bracked from a 520H that I was going to use. After purchasing a nice high back seat from Tractor Supply I discovered none of the predrilled holes in the seat would line up with the 520H system. I used the seat anyway on the old 312 seat bracket. The holes in the seat lined up, but to get the seat back as far as I wanted it to go caused me to have to drill a couple of extra holes in the 312 seat bracket.

Knowing this, I will take the 416 seat bracket and sliders with me when I go seat shopping for that replacement.

Have any of you guys been down this road before, and bought a ready to bolt on replacement seat that will work with this old bolt pattern???

Rural King stores sell a high & low back seat that bolts up for around $40 or a little less.

I'm not sure of the brand name, they are kinda "cheap"...they don't have any vinyle covering, more of a molded foam.

I've had good luck with them & find them pretty comfortable.

This is a low back on a 300 series "mutt".

JASON'S MILSCO MANUFACTURING formerly Michigan Seat is still manufacturing seats in Jackson, Mi. plant is still active every time I drive by. I had a sister-in-law that worked there for a few years when they were bought out about 5 or so years ago. At that time steel pan seats were on their way out as all the OEM wanted the cheaper plastic pan seats (which they did not make the pans for) The business had become real sporadic many layoffs and such. Since they still remain in business I would have to guess that they have converted most of their production to plastic panned seats.

Maybe they are not aware of the demand for original seats for wheel horse and other brands. Most of us would pay a premium for the original seats if they would continue to make them. Made in America to boot!!! If anyone has a phone number I will call them.

The High back I just bought this last summer was a Michigan Seat with the steel pan. But I bought it from Northern Tool maybe it was old stock? It is a great seat just not the right bolt pattern. It did have the MILSCO decal on it.

I called but they close at 4:00. Things must be slow?

I will try to look into what it would take to have someone make the original seats.

I assume Milsco has all the original specs and tooling to at least make what Michigan made.

Toro may have to place the order to Milsco or grant a license to someone to continue making them.

Maybe Toro and / or Milsco would be interested if they received a minimum order?

Original seats from the 70s, 80s, and 90s would be good to be able to get.

Even if the foam and vinyl covers could be re-made, the old metal pans could be re-done.
