TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #27 Posted November 27, 2012 Horse Thief! Nope - I paid what the seller was asking, but it was 1/3 of a package deal....... I bought a 502, 633, and an 857 for $
JUSS10 250 #28 Posted November 27, 2012 All. I can say is please don't part it out. Yes its rusty. Yes there is a chance of engine issues even if it turns over but if I got it, I would run it as is. It really has a great patina to it and it could be a solid machine. As for parts here is how I see it. If you would decide to part it because it needs to much work, the major components probably aren't worth much, in your case if they were you probably would have got it running. Just my .02 How much of a project are you looking for and are you intending to restore it or just get it running? This machine would probably need a lot of work to fully restore, however if you just want to get it running, it will maybe need engine and trans work, linkage work, and a whole lot of grease. Not a ton of work to get it running but it's always a gamble when you buy a tractor in this state. How far is it for you? You keep bringing up the idea of making sure its worth your money and time to get it. For most of us, this is a hobby and we collect these tractors for fun. Yes I like to get a good deal but for me it's more about the trip and the process of getting them running. I've made some bad purchases and some great ones. It's all a part of the hobby! Sorry for the lengthy response, just throwing out my thoughts
47JDG 65 #29 Posted November 27, 2012 I wouldn't fully restore it. I would just get it running and get it up to snuff to the point where it would be reliable. I have a log splitter and a lawn roller I would like to pull around with it. Don't worry, I wouldn't part it out. I am just trying to gauge its value is all, like I said. That was the purpose of my original post. I like old iron and own some pretty neat old machines that have been brought back from the dead.
47JDG 65 #30 Posted November 27, 2012 Will the later style wheels bolt up to this I am wondering, or are they different?
JUSS10 250 #31 Posted November 27, 2012 You mean the wider 23x8.5 tires? I have a set on a 753 so yes they will
47JDG 65 #32 Posted November 27, 2012 Yes, thanks. Do you know if the K161 takes the same points and condenser as the K181? I just looked them up on a Kohler parts dealer site and they are listed together. I have read the K141 is hard to get parts for. What parts are hard to come by? I have a lot of experience with the K181, K241, K341 but none with the K161. I would like to get that engine going.
JUSS10 250 #33 Posted November 27, 2012 i thought the 141, 161, and 181 all used the same block and thus most of the same parts but i may be wrong. as for the large tires here is a picture of my 854 with the bigger tires
47JDG 65 #34 Posted November 27, 2012 Thanks for the picture. They look good on there. Your probably right about the engines. If that's the case then I don't know what the big deal would be for finding parts. They are easy to get and cheap for a k181. I am glad to hear this. I wonder if the bore or stroke, or both is different then? I am assuming the 854 is the exact same tractor as the 633, only with an electric start 8 horse instead? rydogg 186 #35 Posted November 27, 2012 The 854 is not exactly the same I believe the hood is an inch longer. K141 parts are pretty easy to find except for the ignition system for the 633 the coil is NLA and the flywheel can be hard to find also. I have a friend working on a replacement coil for the 633 k141 hopefully it works since I have 2 of them to put together.
JUSS10 250 #36 Posted November 27, 2012 Yeah I really like the big turfs on the back. Makes it look quite a bit bigger. I have them on a 603 in my photo by my name on the left

Its nice to know good deals are still out there. And that is a REAL nice example of a 633 by the way.
Ken B 3,164 #38 Posted November 27, 2012 Here is a pic of a 633 I recently picked up via a block buster deal with Charles. I'm working on getting it up and going, hopefully real soon. This old girl is gonna be left in her old party dress, and believe me she's done some parting in her time! She is gonna be the main snow machine, (unless I gotta bust out the 520) log splitter hauler and firewood hauler. Shoot, she even came with a nice original mower deck, maybe she'll even do some trimmin around the homestead. The most fun for me is takin that very first ride on a tractor after I've brought it back from the dead. Ya can't beat that feeling. Once she is running I'll find an original pan seat for her and call it DONE.
Coadster32 793 #39 Posted November 27, 2012 As all have said, the price is in a decent range. It's what you're willing to spend, and get out of it. I'm pretty sure the points/cond. are the same for the bigger of the range of K-series motors. I won't harp on you parting it out but if you do...just give the RS members here first crack, and be reasonable. This is the only hobby I've ever gotten into that can pay for itself. (No way to do that w/o parting something out along the way). Good luck either way.
Kelly 1,029 #40 Posted November 27, 2012 This started life as a 633 but was incomplete and missing the correct engine, so I built it to use, now has a 8hp with a 8 speed and hyd lift.
jusjeepn 59 #41 Posted November 27, 2012 I wouldn't give more than $50 for it but that's me!

neil 2,409 #44 Posted November 28, 2012 Would be a real shame to part that one out as that would look real nice just oiled over & in original condition SAVE IT
JUSS10 250 #45 Posted November 29, 2012 so how'd you fair with this one? go take a look at it?
47JDG 65 #46 Posted November 29, 2012 I was looking forward to it today but things didn't work out for us. Friday is definite though. I have the trailer on the truck and ready to head out for it!
47JDG 65 #47 Posted November 29, 2012 Don't worry guys. It isn't going to be parted out unless it turns out to be far worse than the pictures reveal it to be. I plan to bring it back to life, but not a complete restoration. I like the patina look. I have a feeling I am rescuing it from the scrap metal yard if I don't take it. So I think I am going to take it regardless. I can't let something like this go off to the smelter.
47JDG 65 #48 Posted December 1, 2012 Well I picked up the 633 today and was very pleased with it once I seen it in person. The engine has good compression and the transmission rolls smoothly and shifts into all the gears as it should. I may just wind up cleaning it all up and restoring it, but first things first I need to get some decent rubber on it so I can push it around my shop and get the engine running. I can't see anything that is missing other than the recoil starter. All of the mowing deck components are there. It looks like a front hang arm separated from the lift plate for the mowing deck and that's when it was parked and left for dead. Other than the way it looks I think it is a pretty good tractor and will be a worth while project. All of the metal is nice and so is the fuel tank. The seller even threw in a complete K321A engine he had in his garage that he just wanted to get out of there. It has good compression and spark. I imagine it will run fairly easy. The starter generator works good. All in all it was a good score today. Here are some pictures of today's loot.
