1952 Briggs NPR6 (Pic Heavy)

Here i go again. I gues I'm just a sucker for these old Briggs engines. I picked up this little NPR6, which is just a gear reducted model of a briggs N. I got it cheap with no compression, and just generally looking like it was ready for the scap yard. I always was a sucker for the really pathetic looking ones that nobody else wants. :ROTF: Anyway, upon removeng the blower housing, I found a mouse nest in the scroud, and of course a rust hole right below it, because of their peeing in it. :banghead: I expected the engine to be shot, but I couldn't believe my eyes when I got the head, and oil pan off. The only reason it didn't have compression was the intake valve was stuck open just a little, and I was able to push it back down with just my finger. The cylinder, piston, rod, and crank looked like new! :woohoo: This engine had use, as was obvious by the carbon in the head, but showed no wear at all. :jaw: It did have a broke off cooling fin on the cylinder head, but I had a spare in the shop, so it was no big deal. So hear are a few pics of yesterday, and I'll show todays work in the next post.

What was the gear reduction for?

Water pump? Roto tiller?

Now for todays work. I soaked the block over night in my chem dip, and then bead blasted any surface rust off. I gave the cylinder a quick 5 second hone, as there was no wear. I installed new rings, lapped the valves, new gaskets, and painted it. Some of my engines, I just give a rattle can paint job, but I decided to use the gun on this one, like I did my 44 N. I also blasted, and painted all the other parts, with the exception of the blower housing which is going to take a little longer, as its going to need some body work. I'm also goint to have to get a gas tank, but I think I may already have that covered. Anyway, hear are todays pics.

Very cool little motor. Internal condition looks amazing for such and old engine. I guess you never know.

They were used for anything you wanted to go slow. :ychain: These gear reducted N's were used on some of the old walk behind tractors as well. :thumbs:

Moving on to day three, its getting close now. :woohoo: Its mostly back together now, and it has fantastic compression, and spark, so as soon as I get the carburetor, shroud, and fuel tank taken care of, it should run like new. I love rebuilding engines, their always the most enjoyable part of any restoration project for me, so it just made sense to start restoring engines! :ROTF: Anyway, here are a couple pics. :thumbs:

Just another quick update. I finally got the rust holes patched up in the schroud, as well as most of the rust pits. The metal was to thin for me to weld the holes shut, and rather than using bondo, I used JB Weld to fill the holes, after I sand blasted it. JB is much stronger than bondo, although it is much more difficult to sand down as well. I put a NOS carburetor on this one, although the ones I rebuild, and coat with the Eastwood Carb Renew look much nicer. Although this carb is new, its been in its box for at least 50 years, so its finish isn't as nice as it should be. :banghead: Anyway, all I need now is a fuel tank, and its new decals, and it will be done. I'd been trying to find a gas tank for this engine, since it didn't have one when I got it. I bid on several on :techie-ebay: , but they always end up going for around $50-$100 :scared-eek: , and I only paid $30 for the engine! I had a correct gas tank for it in my spare parts bin, but it was in very rough shape. :banghead: Anyway, I decided it was time to try, and fix it. So I heated it up at the seem to melt the solder, and using a couple oil filter strap wrenches I opened it up. This allowed me to clean out the rust, and remove the large dent/crease out of it. I then soldered it back together, and leak checked it. All was well. :woohoo: So, I used a little bondo, just to smooth out where I removed the dents. I did manage to get it painted today, but I don't have pics of that yet. The first pic is of the engine I got this tank on. I put a better tank on that engine rather than fix this one, but I had no choice this time, other than to fix this tank. I'm glad I did it, as it was easier than I expected it to be. :thumbs:

The gas tank is finished, and it turned out pretty nice. Its straight as an arrow, although my paint got a little debris in it as usual. :ROTF:

I got the tank on the engine, and I got the decals for it as well. I'm just waiting on my 3/16 copper tubing to make the fuel line out of. I'm tempted to steal the fuel line off one of my other N's, just so I can hear it run! :ROTF: I'm not the patient type. As soon as I have it running, I'll post a video.
