Help - Identification

Recommended Posts

Eric_White

Hi,

I'm Eric, I live in eastern PA, North of Allentown.

I recently came into possession of a Wheel Horse that use to be set up to mow lawn but has now been set up for plowing snow. This use to be my late Step-Father-in-Law's.

It has decals on the hood the say Commando 8 on it. The starter is on the right side and the carb is on the left (uses a round air cleaner approximately 4" outside diameter. It's a 3 speed with a short shifter handle in the center along with the park brake. The fuel tank is not completely square, the edges are radiused.

THere is a plate under the control panel with the model number 1-4581.

Can anyone help identify this Wheel Horse? I will be able to post some pics Monday night.

Thanks,

Eric

Is it possibly 1-4851? Any serial number with it?

If it is a Commando 8, and if the decals are original, the hood should have a decal on either side that says "Wheel Horse". The gas tank holder should have a decal that says Commando. Under the word Commando, a separate "8" decal should be applied to that. However, the 1968 Commando 8 would have the number 1-4831 on the ID tag. Oxidation over the years can make the numbers on those aluminum tags appear to be different than originally engraved. Take a closer look.

Once you post some pictures, I'm sure we will be able to get you a positive ID.

:WRS: , Eric.

1-4851 is a Commando V8 - which is where I believe Garry is going with this.

The starter would be on the right and the carb on the left of a vertical-shaft engine.

Thanks for the welcome Guys,

Mine looks more like the second one, the 69 commando. However, the carb side looks

slightly different. I got a call that the starter is finished being rebuilt, as soon as I get it

reinstalled I'll pull it out in the sun for pics.

Thanks.
