trans freewheels when tractor is not running

Recommended Posts

I have a 73 16auto with the sunstrand in it and I was wondering if its normal that when the tractor is not running the trans doesnt hold the tractor in place, no park brake to speak of. Is there anything i can do to. Try to get it to not roll when i park it?

Is there any kind of parking brake or pawl that engages the transmission gears on that tractor? I'm not too familiar with that model, but my '75 d series has this set up. A lever raised up and to the left engages a parking pawl with the teeth of one of the transmission gears that keep it from rolling anywhere.

THere is no kind of parking brake and no pawl the only thing I have is a "release" screw that is supposed to have "engage" and "disengage like other hydros I've seen. I do have the belt release also but that shouldn't have much to do with it. I will have to play with the screw tomorrow to see if maybe its in the middle of drive or freewheel

Some tractors when you pull the belt release lever it sets the parking brake, if the brake is not broke like many of them.

Your 16 should have a parking brake. That is the lever with the two black knobs on either side that pulls up or pushes down in the console. When pulled up, the belt is released and the brake pawl is engaged in the transaxle, keeping the tractor from moving. Pushed down releases the pawl and engages the belt. If that is not working correctly, you will roll.

The drive - tow valve handle should be front to back. One way is drive 180 degree turn and you are in tow mode. Could be a leaky tow valve but then you would be having performance issues. Tractor should be very hard to push more than a foot or two in drive mode (engine off)

The parking brake is in the rear end and on almost all tractors of that vintage has been worn so much it no longer engages the gear to lock the rear end.

Repair requires splitting the rear end. I believe some have gotten away with pulling the hydro motor and working through that hole. My hands are too big and clumsy to do that :)

Rather than pulling the trans apart, if parking, use a wheel chock.
