Well, I am in a bind. I want a wheelhorse, but need some help finding out what to buy. I'm looking for one that will support a decent set-up, like a plow, snowblower, bit my biggest concern is the rototiller. What models am I looking for? Thanks for your help guys. It might be nice to have a be all, end all list.

Look for any c-series 12 h.p. or bigger or any 300, 400, 500 series

Gear drive will be your best bet with running a tiller.

Hydros are nice for mowing and plowing with the hydro lift.

Roto tillers and other attachments are harder to come by than tractors.

Find a set of attachments. if the tractor they come with is no good,

You can always find another tractor to fit your attachments.

I have a '89 416-8 that I have had since new.

I have mowed, snow blowed and plowed with this unit and I would highly recommend it for the chores you have listed.

It originally had the Onan, I would look for one a couple years older with the Kohler.

You will love the low gear range of the 8-speed.

buy a 314-8 gets better gas mileage than a 416-8 with a twin cylinder onan unless you can find one with a single cylinder kohler

I would buy basically what everyone else has said. The 300, 400, and 500 series are good all-purpose working tractors. Also, you wouldn't want a hydro if you're using a tiller.

Yeah like the 310........I would try and find a nice 312-8, they seem to be fairly plentiful. Personally that is one of my favorite all around tractors for doing many different jobs.

I second the 416-8. That's what I have and it's a beast. I agree on anything 300-400-500 series. They take what you throw at them. I also side with 12+ hp for running a blower and tiller. I love the power of my Onan 16.... And yes if something would happen to go wrong with it.. I will spend the money to get it rebuilt, but I keep up on keeping it clean and tuned up.... Yeah that's the other way to do buy a tractor for different attachments that has features you like and build a stable!  A lot of the Red Square members seem to do that -after they get the first tractor!!

I second that! I am lovin' this 520-8 even before I've used it.

The 520-8 must be a rare bird, I found this one sittin', wasn't used in two years.

Previous owner had problems, all worked out now.

The 414-8 or 416-8 are both fine Stallions too! A lot easier to find and purchase too.

I have been working on this Horse for a couple of months. Just applied the decals that Terry made, a beautiful job I might add. Next up SS muffler shield, deck and Attach-A-Matic decals.

Man, carlsbarn2, I was biten my tongue. But you said it, so I'm gonna second it. My C-175 is my main worker, it's an 8 speed and she's got power! Does whatever I ask of it. Oops gotta be careful of making strong statements, might get called out on them. Might have to prove it with videos, of course that might be fun too.

just get one for each job you wanna one fro tilling, one for mowing, one for plowing snow and so forth and so on.How ever i tried this than my wif came out to my shop and asked why all of them have a snow plow on at the same time .  Ill have to agree with jake on this the C160 is a real power house as are the 300,400,and 500 tractors.

In reality, you may end up with at least two. One for mowing, the other for dirt/snow digging/plowing.

Okay, but just one. Here is a list, in order:

416-8, C-160 8-speed: Kohler magnum or K341. No Onans or Briggs.

414-8, C-140, Again, Kohler.

314-8

312-8, C-120

310-8, C-100

 

The 400 series has a bit beefier tranny. More HP is always better, but fuel usage needs to be considered.

So, no Onans, Kohler are easy to find replacement parts and engines.

The 310, 312, C100, C120 may not have quite the power for heavy tilling. Some newer 314s, if I'm not

mistaken, have the same beefier drivetrain as the 400 series.

 

Do what you can to find a tractor with attachments. If the tractor is not the one you want, sell it and

get another.

What advice would I give me? Hang on, its gonna be a fun ride!!! I have met some great people from this site. And learned almost too much. I have a plow, blower and working on getting a tiller now. I'm glad I followed my thoughts on getting into this hobby. The help and time everyone gives on this forum is the main reason I did. And I hope to get wise enough to start giving back!

glad i got several. but to choose just one, it would be a C series or a 400 series eight speed. 14 hp is a good middle of the road size. good luck with your search, i'm sure you'll enjoy which ever you choose.     oh yeah and don't forget

The first thing I'd ask is "How much are you budgeting for this tractor"?   The answer can vary a lot depending on that.   Personally, I tend to buy a tractor for each attachment since some of the attachments can be a good workout to swap and I'm not getting any younger.
