Filling Transmission/Differential

Recommended Posts

Antiquated

I am changing out the oil in the trans on my '80 c145 8 speed and I'm not sure where to fill it back up. I guess it takes 2 quarts but there is a little fill hole next to the hitch and it looks like if I fill it there, 2 quarts will not fit. Do I fill it there or put the 2 quarts down the dipstick hole?

You can pull out the shfter and fill it quickly through there or go slow through the dipstick tube..

I fill them in the dip stick tube, it goes in faster if you pull one of the bolts from the top of the trans next to the dip stick tube, it lets air out as oil goes in.

Well then what is that filler-looking hole really low next to the hitch with the square headed bolt? Is the transmission lube the only lube needed back there?

That's all that goes in there.

That filler was necessary for older tractors that did not have the dipstick. It seems they just kept using the same casting to make them.

I filled it with 2 quarts, drove it around the backyard and rechecked the oil level. Is it normal for there to be little bubbles and an almost frothy appearance to the trans oil?

Yes, let it set a hour it will go away, just be sure it still does not have water in it, the oil will turn milky looking.

Thought maybe you'd throw in a pic of the ole C-145?...sweet running Kohler isn't it?....let me know when you are ready for a snow blade!

PS...did you get a manual for that tractor?

I'm really enjoying this thing, Frank. I don't have a manual yet and I'm ready for a snow plow just about anytime. I will have one by winter for sure. Hopefully it will actually snow this winter. I changed the oil in the engine and transmission and I have a new shifter boot on order. I think there was some water in the trans so I want to make sure that doesn't happen again. I'm pretty happy with it.
