loki0876 0 #1 Posted September 4, 2012 Newbie here to the Wheel Horse forum. I decided to join the cult and bought myself an awesome machine, 1971 800 special. It's in really good shape except for a small carb issue and this stink-in snapped shifter. So as you know I snapped the shifter rod to the tranny, not really sure how i did it, just did. I can't seem to find another anywhere to purchase. I made an attemp to fix it by having buddy of mine weld it but it didn't take, snapped within 30 seconds of being put back in the tranny. It snapped right at the ball that is in the shifter housing. My terminology might not be exact here but i'm trying. I know this is a rare tranny and i am sure no one has extra shifters laying around to sell so i'm trying to figure out what to do here. I'm uploading pics in a few so you know what i am taking about. Just wanted to get this out there so if anyone has one to sell or an idea of how to fix it let me know. Maybe a tranny swap with a different year or a better trick to get the weld to hold??? Anything really will help. Thanks
DeWayne 1 #2 Posted September 5, 2012 Sorry to hear about the shift assembly going south. The 800 Special was my first as well and have just started going through it. I let it set idle for several years while my health built back and it was in very bad shape. I'll rebuild a Kohler this winter for it and let it join the small herd I have started. Very happy to see another 800 in our midst. These folks here are very quick and someone will have the answer. Welcome aboard, DeWayne

HorseWhisperer 243 #6 Posted December 16, 2012 The very first time I got my 800 scab built special home the very same thing happened, broke it in the same spot.I tore it apart, welded it and found it a New home days later. It shows the quality department was gone these days.If us didn't know it the wheel horse plant employees where on strike in 71 and this was put together by amateurs off the street,it was the only tractor made during the strike. It's an anchor.
