cjsdad 18 #1 Posted September 2, 2012 How do I get it working without taking the transaxle apart? I have read a bunch of threads about this but they all seem to be broken by the time a thread gets started. Mine doesn't seem to be broken yet but the shifter certainly doesn't want to move. Is there any way to get the shifter un-stuck without breaking it or disassembling it? I know that Coke-a-cola will dissolve rust in engines, can I pour the trans full of Coke (not the DeLorian kind!) and let it eat any rust out of it then rinse and re-fill with gear oil? Any other type of industrial solvent that would work? Any synthetic pieces besides the axle seals inside that would make using solvents a bad idea? Terry M-(Moderator) 2,176 #4 Posted September 2, 2012 I'm far from being an expert, but if you,ve been working it alot and it's still stuck i'd guess some repairs might be in order. A shifting problem I had on a trans ended up being just a "C" clip popping off. maybe some of the trans experts will chime in. hope you figure it out. stevasaurus 22,868 #5 Posted September 2, 2012 If you think it is just rust, I would drain and fill it with kerosene, put it on blocks and run it for a while (20 to 30 minutes). If you want to add something to go after the rust, add about 1/2 can of Seafoam to the kerosene. Might have to drain and redo it, but if it frees up...put in 1 1/2 qts of 90w and you should be good to go. If it is still stuck, you could have a bent piece (shifting plate) that would require you to open the transmission to fix. Either way, doing the clean out I suggest, will go a long way in making a tear down easier. There are some excellent threads with pictures showing how to do a 6/8 speed transmission.
