Ken B 3,165 #26 Posted September 4, 2012 I think you did very well, especially if the rear diff is in pretty good shape.

jwicker 9 #28 Posted September 4, 2012 What are my alternatives to those $80 each Carlisle Bar Treads?
jwicker 9 #29 Posted September 4, 2012 What's the chance these import Harbor Freight wheel/tire combos will fit the front of the RJ? http://www.harborfre...tire-37767.html 5/8" hub. or these http://www.harborfre...heel-97184.html 3/4" Edit: Looks like the Front spindle is 3/4"... (according to the 3/4" snap ring description on the owner's manual in the how to put it together area) I'll stop by HF this afternoon to see if the wheels are approx the same width. All info appreciated. Also - I'll get some picts this PM when I unload it from my truck.
Jake Kuhn 1,573 #30 Posted September 4, 2012 You can get the carlisles at miller tire for 65 each. That is the cheapest place to get them that I know of. They don't look good but wheel barrow tires work on the spindles which you can get for 10 or 15 bucks at tsc. Jake
jwicker 9 #31 Posted September 5, 2012 We are going to blast the rear wheels to see what condition they are in. That will decide a lot. If they are salvageable, then I found a local Nanco set for $65 ea. I think we'll go with the (ugly) China front specials from Harbor Freight for $40 for both wheels and tires. We can always upgrade. The gas tank is nearly spotless inside (whew). (that part worries me) Also the drive pulley seal is shot and is leaking badly. I priced the NAPA seal at just over $9. (I hope it drives in from the outside of the tranny case) The hood is going to take some beatings and welds to whip it back into shape (literally). Also - the tranny seems to only "work" in 1 gear. All others feel the same as neutral (not good). I worry a lot about that part ! - - Somebody assure me it's an easy fix ! Aside from missing the oem heat shield ( make shift sheet metal alternative bolted right to the hood), all belt guards and the kill switch..... ha I'll try to post some picts tomorrow... far too late for me tonight. (beauty rest and all that) $160 lost forever?
jwicker 9 #32 Posted September 5, 2012 Got the RJ out of my truck and dropped it off at my Mom and Dad's. (No room in my garage) The frame is sitting on a roll around cart as we have pulled the wheels off to sand blast.
hcminis 1,573 #33 Posted September 5, 2012 Good for you. Can't believe all the phone calls and text that he wouldn't budge from the $240.00. Glad you got the tractor. Hope you get it looking good.
jwicker 9 #34 Posted September 5, 2012 We'll get it looking better. Good is a stretch. ha
evanloock 224 #35 Posted September 5, 2012 It still has the leather shift boot on it I see.
jwicker 9 #36 Posted September 5, 2012 Yep - boot is there and it's a lovely red paint job on it too. haha The boot is one of the pieces that IS there - and still available for sale. Too bad the other items are long gone.
evanloock 224 #37 Posted September 5, 2012 The leather boot was only used on the earliest of RJ's as was the squared off clutch link.....preserve the boot, they are few and far between. The ones still available are rubber and look completely different.
Ken B 3,165 #38 Posted September 6, 2012 I very much agree about that leather shift boot. I'm very fortunate that my early original RJ 58 still has its leather boot still in excellent condition. Don't toss or lose it!
jwicker 9 #39 Posted September 6, 2012 What is that triangle shaped bracket hanging off of the bottom of the middle of the frame? Snow plow mount?
hcminis 1,573 #40 Posted September 6, 2012 that is for a sickle bar or early dozer blade.
jwicker 9 #41 Posted September 7, 2012 It's awesome having a Dad that's retired. Hood is nearly ready for prime.
scootaj 2 #42 Posted August 13, 2014 I have an RJ-58 from when I was a kid. Just looking for more information on this...would appreciate anything you could tell me! Someone said having the original seat and cover guards over the rear tires is rare? Have not run it for many, many years...there is still compression in the motor though... That's all I know...other than I ran it all the time 35 years ago...
AMC RULES 37,144 #43 Posted August 13, 2014 I've never seen fenders like those pictured. Is there still a serial #/ID tag located on the top of the left front frame rail?
