What would you do with it?

The Rusty Model 702

  1. 1. I took this tractor with it's 50 years of accumulated gunk to work with me for a much needed steam cleaning. Now that I can see what I'm working with, I'm wondering what direction I sould take this project?

    • Strip it down and restore it like Martin does?
      16
    • Stop messing with it and leave it alone?
      11
    • Park it back outside for another 50 years?

There used to be an "Industrial" type of primer back in the 60's. It had a yellow tint. The name of it escapes me. Maybe that's it? :scratchead:

Zinc-chromemate the Navy used it under red-lead primer to help dry the red lead.

That's it. I new it had a 2 part name. You can still get it in spray cans. The last time I saw it used it had a yellow/green tint.

I just gotta say, to all you guys who recommended a belt guard...you sure weren't kidding.

Man! What a difference...check out this before and a few afters. :)

Belt guards are a necessity. Especially when you run a :wh: with bare feet! :ychain: :)

Zink-cromemate is a great product to paint over rusted parts to make paint stick to it and last. I remember some of the older guys I know talking about the stuff. they would take new metal and let it rust a little and then paint it with this stuff intellectually! Doesn't seem right in today's world.

Humm, sounds like the perfect match for this project. :)

So it's a primer then...I thought the general consensus is that :wh: didn't use any primers during production? :scratchead:

not really a primer, but a something for the primer to stick to. Kind of like a sealer.

Maybe they used it in the "old days" before they started "penny pinching" How many 60's :wh: 's do we find that are still in pretty good shape while one's out of the 80's and newer have big rust blotches and paint falling off in sheets?

I would think it is the metal they used that caused all the rust, or it was already rusted before it was painted.

I'll tell ya what I'd do with it, I wouldn't go crazy on it but I would do a nicer worker restoration on it. At the end of the day the only person that needs to be happy with it is you.

I'm thinking, that just may have already started Ken.
