Whats up with this?

Just finished working on my 8 horse B-80 this a.m. This morning I put on my spare starter as my orignal was sort of hit or miss. The replacement starter spins the engine good but sounds like a 57 DODGE when cranking. I am afraid my neighbors will turn me in for noise polution. I did not put any grease on the gear. Should I? Will this wear in in time? Two bolts hold this puppy on so I dont think it is an alignment problem. Thanks for your advise! Jim

I think some of them had shim washers under the bolts. I wouldnt try to used it too long that way as it could wipe out the teeth on the flywheel.

It may be the bearing on the end of the starter, what does it sound like off the tractor? You can rebuild the starters fairly easily take the two long bolts out and pull off the armature (be careful of the brushes they are spring loaded) a good cleaning and oiling usually will get one running quite nicely.

But doesn't everyone want their tractor sounding like a 57 Dodge...

But yeah what Sousakerry2 said. They rebuild fairly easily.

Hello again guys. I found my starter problem on my 8 horse B-80. I removed my spare and it has 18 teeth my old stock one has 15.The spare is for an 800 tractor. This teaches me to pay attention to what I am doing. Thanks for the input and advice. krazy_horse
