Workin' the Ratty 702

Recommended Posts

AMC RULES

Putzed away the morning today, attempting to straighten out the new 702 hood.

Ended up leaving most of the minor dents, and removing a bit of the "patina" instead.

I'm thinkin' I'm liking it for now...fits much better, yet retains most of it's as found character. :wh:

That looks nice. Are you going to paint it or leave it steel? I have a 701 in similar shape and I know it will never be perfect and I don't think I want it to perfect, it was a worker all it's life and some battle scars are kinda nice. Can't wait to see how you continue, good job.......Gene

Take a look at the second page of "Stig Special" for some inspiration on getting that hood looking first class.

I did the same with my commando 8 this week. I cleaned it, degreased it and rubbed it with LINSEEDOIL. It's made from seeds/pits from the tree and is often used to put on wood.

It is also used over here by tractor collectors to keep your tractor the original color but keep it protected from rust. It makes the rust look darker and makes the paint shine really nice. It gives a patina to it.

I'll post pics when I'm ready with the commando 8.

Some people just use some old motor oil on a rag. Definatly helps keeps new rust from forming. I think it looks pretty neat myself.

COMMANDO6

It would be interesting to see an entire tractor go paintless...

But that'd not be RED enough.

Trust me, it's taking all I've got to not take it down to bare steel...and leave it. :)

Hi Craig take a look at this pic & this will give you an idea of what the steel & cast iron will look like when polished up

It is a paste that is used for cast iron to bring back the dark lustre of cast iron .

I you imagine this cast iron fireplace in a rusty condition then just Brush or use a rag to wipe the paste on then leave for a few minutes then buff it up then it looks like this

i use it on a lot of old cast iron around the house & on other things, i even blacked up one of my old plows & it looks great & gives it a real Antique look

also take a look at so of the other examples of how it looks on this photobucket

Lars, do you E-tank your parts to get it to the bare metal stage?

Then what are you using on them to prep for paint?

I ask because all the images you've shared...your bare metal parts look better than NOS.

Graig

Go to this ebay link http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stovax-Black-Grate-Graphite-Polish-Victorian-Cast-Iron-Stove-Range-Fire-Basket-/370618159149?pt=UK_HG_FireplacesMantelpieces_RL&hash=item564a90502d

You can purchase this stuff from UK & is cheap to ship , I would say that you would only require one tube to do the Whole tractor but i would buy a few more tubes just to be on the safe side

As long as you dont leave the tractor outside it wont go rusty , But if you manage to get the tractor a bit wet just rub over it again with a bit more past & it will look nice and shiny again

If you choose to buy some of this stuff , where gloves when putting it on as it can be quite messy to your hands , & i would also recommend trying it out on another bit of steel just to see the results
