Killer 2000 Chevy 83 #1 Posted July 28, 2012 What is the mule drive for and what models are they used on?
Martin 2,133 #2 Posted July 28, 2012 the mule drive redirects the mower drive belt from the pto to the deck drive system.... it fits on the front attach a matic..... not sure how many models used them, my c125 and c 160 both use that drive...... you can see it here on the front of my c125, just below the grille...... not real close up but this is the only pic i have of one on a tractor.... off the tractor...... 6wheeler 603 #3 Posted July 28, 2012 Its for driving your deck or snow blower off of the engine. As Martin said, it re-directs your power to the implement. I also don't know all of the models that used them but all of my C's do and my 520 does as did the 300 and 400 series. It is a brilliant and integral part in the attach-a matic system. zieg72 209 #4 Posted July 28, 2012 I "believe" there are 3 styles. One for the 520H "60 inch deck", one for a 37" deck, and the other that covers all the rest. I am sure other with correct or confirm my understanding...
TT-(Moderator) 1,145 #5 Posted July 28, 2012 "Mule drive" is a slang term (incorrect in this case) for a multiple groove pulley/sheave used to change the direction (not rotational direction though) of two or more belt runs between different shafts. The earlier gear drive WH decks are a good example. The three groove pulley on the end of the hitch shaft is turned by the PTO belt from the engine. That same pulley then turns the two smaller belts connected to the pulley on the deck cross shaft. Borrowed from a recent post: These things are actually called front idler support assemblies, or - as I prefer - deck drive belt tensioners: That version has been used to tension the mower deck drive belt on horizontal shaft garden tractors since the inception of the Attach-Matic hitch system in late 1972. The 60" deck did use a spring-loaded derivative, but the others were basically the same. The tensioner for the earlier 37" SD deck did use two V groove idlers instead of one V and one flat, but that was because of the unique six-sided belt. The rest of the assembly is the same. There's just something about a mule being a horse cross-breed that makes me not want to use that word around my tractors. :ychain:

jhunsch 20 #7 Posted August 5, 2012 I had a extra Mule drive & needed some thing up front to hang weight on. So I came up with this idea. I just have to remove one bolt and nut and, put the pulls back on and the drive is ready to run the mower deck. Jeff
