Why not to tow a hydro faster than you can push it

I was bringing my Cub Cadet 1914 to work so it could be serviced and ended up getting run off the road by one of the local kids. The trailer hit a big pot hole and caused the straps to break letting the tractor come off and go down the road at about 25 mph. This is a 950lb tractor that is a little bigger than a 520 but not as big as a D series. When it came off both tires hit the road at the same time and went about 15 feet on the road before deciding to head into the woods where it went over an old rotted tree and the front tire hit a sapling about the size of the tire. It destroyed the drive motor in the Sundstrand hydro pump. The first pic is what its supposed to look like and the second pic is what I took out of it.post-6402-0-18377500-1343099786_thumb.jppost-6402-0-20013300-1343099802_thumb.jp Fortunetly there both the same and were used in every Cub Cadet hydro from the first ones untill they stopped using the Sundstrand Pumps and probably the same as any other tractor that used the Sundstrand pump. I'll get it fixed but its just anyoing that it happend in the first place. So dont tow it too fast. This is just a worst case senario but its better to be safe that have to fix something like this and its not cheap unless you have spare parts lying around

Suprisingly the only other damage was a broken hood hinge, broken tab on the grill insert and a slight kink on the top edge of one side panel. And for some reason one rear tire decided it wants to go flat every other day now. Even if the thing had decided to go end over end down the road I'd still try to fix it because it came from the factory with front hydraulics, three point hitch and rear pto. Not many of them did and not many people paid the extra grand or more to put them on after they bought them. I'll get a couple pics of the tractor when I get the rear wheels back on to take it outside to steam clean the rear end

And my step son wonders why I am so fanatical about the way I strap tractors down to a trailer....

I'd say next time let the kid hit you so he has to pay for the repairs :handgestures-thumbupright:

I'm usualy pretty good about straping them down, but was in a hurry and figured one strap would be good enough as it was only about two miles from home to work. I would have let him hit me but he was in a tiny little import and I was in my truck which is a 1992 Dodge Ram diesel and didnt want to end up hurting him. Cause knowing my luck it would have totald his car and I'd end up with a scratched bumper. I'd rather fix my tractor or truck than have to deal with that

Thanks not many people say that. I finally got some spare time in the past couple days to work on it. Got all new gaskets seals and bearings for the pump, got it cleaned up and put back on the tractor. Put tubes in the rear tires and got a new hydraulic line to the lift valve as one was leaking and a new dipstick and tube for the rear end because the old one just sucked to try to get out.post-6402-0-76222900-1344395491.jpgpost-6402-0-78294600-1344395502.jpgpost-6402-0-93693600-1344395512.jpgpost-6402-0-41558900-1344395522.jpgpost-6402-0-89251100-1344395531.jpg The table its on holds a standard garden tractor with no problem. As you can see it just fits and the steering wheel is just about level with the top of my head and the table is about even with my knees and i'm 6'2". Just to give an idea of how big it is

WOW what a mess. I am glad everthing turned out ok for you. That Hydro looks alot like the ones in the D series tractors. It would be nice to know if we (D owners) could use CC as a parts supplier for our hydros. Did you happen to get a pick of the valve plate underneath the cylinder assy? Could you give a link to the CC parts web site for the hydros?

Thanks

Britt
