Restoration 604 or 854

Hey guys I just picked up a 604 and an 854 about a week ago. I only wanted one for a restoration but I ended up with 2. The pics are in my gallery I can't upload them on this thread cause the computer is acting up. Anyway I can't decide which to restore what do you guys think? Would it be more beneficial to restore one over the other for some reason? The 604 needs metal work on the hood And motor work( thinking about a bigger motor too also would like your thoughts on that). the 854 smokes a little when starting and when I first open up the throttle. Other than that it's real solid and runs good. The lower hood mounting bracket is beat up with a lot of bad welds but that's it for the body work. What re your guys thoughts?

Well, first you have to think about your abilities? can you do the metal work? can you do the needed engine work? how much money do you want to spend on this project? what one needs the most? which tractor fits the bill for these questions? I vote for the 854 as I like the kohlers better, and it is a more complete machine, but in the end you are the one that has to be happy with your choice.

Yes I can do the work. I'm relatively new to tractors as collectors items but I've worked on cars since I was a kid. My stepfather had a hot rod and race shop.The 604 needs more metal work and will take more time but I'm not in a rush. If I went with the 604 I would repower it anyway. I'm finishing up a k241 rebuild now. I was just curious if one model was more desirable than the other.

I'd keep them both, and restore the 854 first since it doesn't need as much, then when the post restoration blues kick in start on the 604. I speak from expirence, once your done restoring the first one you'll be hooked, and be ready to start on the next!

I still say 854, and on the repower not sure what you want to power it with? but factory the only engines that came in the body are a pull or elect. start 6hp Tecumseh, or a pull start 7hp Kohler not much else will fit with out cutting the hood, or the fuel tank tray.

Go with the 854. I had a 604 that had a real tired Techy on it, I replaced it with a super strong 7hp Kohler pull start. Best move I ever made!
