dcrage 628 #5 Posted January 6, 2011 My mistake -- Kinda assumed everything in Maine would be smallmouths -- Didn't look at the strip down the side
dcrage 628 #6 Posted January 6, 2011 Just because its too cold to start wading down a creek chasing those guys, I just have to keep coming back and looking at that picture -- The more I look, I think that is what is called a "spotted" black bass -- Here in MO the streams can have 3 kinds of black bass now: smallmouth, largemouth, and spots -- Conservation Dept says to take the spots out of the smallmouth streams -- The definitive ID on spotted bass is something about a dorsal fin that isn't totally seperated and a rough spot on the tongue?? -- I can never remember that so I always use "back of the mouth goes past the eyes" on a real largemouth -- So if it looks like a largemouth (i.e. greenish black with a stripe down the side) and the mouth doesn't go all the way past the eyes, I figure it is a spotted bass Fun to think about fishing
