103916 tranny questions (8 speed 8 pinion)

First post here in a while but I finally got the tranny pulled out of my C-111 tonight and have a couple questions:

The symptoms I was having were:

when I moved the hi/low lever it felt like nothing was happening inside the tranny

in any gear the tractor would not move, I have confirmed that the keys on the input pulley and hubs are OK

does this sound like it popped into neutral in the range portion of the tranny and due to a broken shift fork I can't shift between ranges?

Also the shaft for the range selector will move up and down about 3/8 of an inch, is this normal?

I suspect that you are right - the hi/low shift fork has broken and thise gears are in a neutral position.

i would look at the shifter lever before tearing the rear apart, the shifter may of been pulled up and when pushed back in not put in the middle of the shifter blocks, sometimes the dog point screw loosens and the lever will not work correct or poull out, when u take the shifter out look into the trans and you will see a square area that the shifter lever should slide into and retighten the dog screw, and then tighten the nut that holds it in place,if its not the dog screw then it sounds like a broken shifter, but the lever should not move up and down that much

I am talking about the range shifter shaft. it will move up and down about 3/8 of an inch. when I first got the tractor I had to replace the roll pin in the gear selector and it shifts fine into 1, 2, 3 and reverse

Will, Since the high-low shifter will move that much..I about guarantee the high-low shifter fork is broke...the fork that moves the gear actually holds the shifter up...the shifter has a notch that sits over the fork..

If you look at the bottom left of the shifter fork you will see a wear area at the rounded point of the shifter fork..that were the notch in the shifter rides if the fork is broke off you will get alot of up and down movement of the shifter..
