550 or 551 ?

Recommended Posts

All along I was certain I had a 550 dropped in my lap (thanks dad) based on the info I had so far. I guess I really never got down to confirm it. Now after coming across some bits and peices in these forums..I have no idea what I have :( ...Some help here would be appreciated. :)

I'm so new at this I think even put my fenders on wrong... jeeze! That might explain why my seat almost hits them without me even getting on!

since it has a 3 piece transmission it would be a 550

Looks like a 550 to me.

A 551 would have the two-piece Uni-Drive transaxle, cast brake pedal, and there would be a spot for the battery on the frame just ahead of the engine.

Thanks,

I'm guessing my way thru this best I can where stuff goes as this is my first encounter with a tractor like this and It was already mostly disassembled when I got it. I'm not certain I was even searching for the correct air cleaner assembly. I plan to make it to the Arendtsville show next weekend and will have to do some studying there :)

I was even searching for the correct air cleaner assembly.

The engine currently on your tractor is from a 1961 551. A 550 should have an H55B -1170 (Tecumseh) Lauson, which would have

originally had a Tillotson updraft carb, so finding the correct air cleaner means finding the rest of the pieces - which may prove difficult.

WP_000147.jpgCorrecdt me if im wrong but doesnt isnt the hood on this tractor from a 1960 401 suburban as they had the square hole for the choke and throttle levers

and you do have the correct fenders for the tractor

As far as I know the fenders and hood are original. I could be wrong of course.

Agreed with terry, its a 550. Can also tell because of the hole for the throttle cables in the hood and the foot rest laying next to it. Jake

This hood is a 1960 with the square hole for the levers ( 400 / 550 ) but a 401 is a 1961 and will have the two small round holes by the steering shaft ( 401 / 551 ).

I have a k91 kohler (4hp) if you want to trade for the lauson 5.5 than you would have a 400 suburban instead of a 550 since the only difference was the engine I believe. It would be pull start only since very few if any k91 engines were electric start.

Thanks for the correction Wallfish , i did actually mean the 400 not the 401 as i said before . & i didnt realise the 400 & the 550 had the same hood

another lesson learnt

Last night I removed a non original Tecumseh H60 from my Suburban 550. It wasn't running right and I'm going to use the H60 for another project. I put a sweet running Kohler K91 on it. All I can say is MUCH BETTER!

Thanks for the trade offer but since I've already invested in a new starter, solenoid, battery and wireing, I think I'll continue on this route. My new seat came the other day so I'm going to work on it today and see how much more together I can get this 550...think I'l go get the new choke and throttle cables made up and get the hood on and foot rests too...oh ya, forgot I have to gas tank straps to deal with..hmm...well, onward I go !!

You should keep the lauson engine! It is extremely hard to find and very sought after :twocents-02cents:. Wise choice not to trade, enjoy your tractor and good luck with the restoration.

I've decided it's come time to sell the little horse. I don't want to give it away and would just like a fair price from it. The trouble is, I don't know what a fair price would be :P. Any estimates would be appreciated!

Really nice little tractor there. I haven't had that many round hoods myself and no nut roasters so I would have no clue on price.
