jsmoe 2 #1 Posted June 7, 2012 Hello All, As you can see I'm a new guy around here. I've had a few tractors but the only one worth mention besides this is my A-90 (my daily driver that I've keept alive over the years. I have never dug too deep into a project like you guys have. I guess I'll get my feet wet with this 550. I picked this up 2 days ago from my Dad that lost interest or motivation, and fiqured the best place to start is seeing if the engine would breathe life. (Dad was going to put a brand new Briggs on it) I did get it to fire a little before the rope broke and seeing as the starter needs a new drive gear and brushes, I've come to a stop there. I think I'll clean the carb while I scratch my head on how to proceed. I think I'll need the starter parts and correct pull start assembly first. http://s715.photobuc...mview=slideshow

jsmoe 2 #5 Posted June 7, 2012 Thanks Everyone, I've decided to get the engine back off and mount it on my bench this morning so that i can get more up close and personal with it There is "Jack's Wheel Horse" not too far from me in Sarver, PA that I hope to get the starter parts from today and maybe even a carb kit. I guess I'll re-rope that blue pull starter for now but hope to locate the correct one.

MarkPalmer 81 #8 Posted June 7, 2012 Looking at the slideshow it was coming along good, and I would proceed at getting the engine running. Be glad dad didn't put that new Briggs on it. I think a lot of the originality would be spoiled by replacing the H55 Tec even though I believe its an aluminum block. -Mark-
jsmoe 2 #9 Posted June 9, 2012 Yesterday's search for some starter and carb parts didn't go real well, spent half the day and quite a few miles on the motorcycle and all I had come up with was a gasket that I only sort of needed ... Until the very last stop before heading home where an elderly couple run the counter at a Simplicity dealer. The old man went in the back to search for starter brushes and drive gear and was gone a short while. The old woman was pretty quick and came back with the rubber seal for the carburetor bowl that nobody else had produced all day. the old man finally comes back to the front stating that he does not have the brushes or drive gear for it... although he stood there with a complete starter in his hand. I paused..waiting for him to go on.. wait..wait.. He says, I have this gently used one, but I gotta get $50 for it... I tried not to look TOO happy... compared the 2 starters, and said, yes! this will save me some monkeying around LOL...not to mention the $$$ as well. ANYWAYS...those 2 items were enough to get me up and running, now if only my seat would get here I could take a putt around the yard! With the original engine up and running, It's an all go from here :)
