a little help with this brand new old 502 horse.

i found an old 502 along side an an original international cub cadet at an estate sale. i know all about the cub because iv been selling them for 41 years. but im a little ignorant of the wheel horse. im wondering about a little history of the 502, if and how they can restored and if there is a market for selling the old ones. im trying to decide if i should take on a restoration or if i should try and sell this horse as is (wich is nearly flawless) and then what it might be worth

You have a very nice horse there. The hood looks great, as does the belt guard and the square seat. The engine should be a 5.5 Tecumsah/Lawson. The tag on the engine should read HT55C-3088P. This engine is on the rare side and is sought after. It has an oil pump instead of using the splash method. The transmission is a #5025 Uni-Drive Wheel Horse...and excellent transmission, but not rare. The 502 is not really rare, but is hard to find in original condition. Because of that, I would clean it up and keep it un-restored...in original condition. Remember, it is only original once...and yours appears to be a very nice one. Hard to say what it is worth...say $300 to 600...maybe $700 to the right collector. I would be in the $400 range.

BTW...Welcome to Red Square...I am sure others will chime in here with their thoughts. :)

Did I fail to mention that it is a 1962 horse...the model and serial are on the dash tower under the steering wheel...should be 62-#####. 502 breaks down to be 5 = 5.5 engine...0 = pull start...2 = 1962.

One other thing...looks like you also have the tool box (rare) right behind the engine where a battery would go.

if its as clean and original as you say then leave it as it is it would be worth more as it is

and its better left original .. I would keep it if i were you, besides whatever you get for it its hardly going to change your life and these little gtems dont come up vet often

obviously its your tractor to do what you want to do with it,leave it factory,restore,paint it yellow(please dont do that )but restoring it wont make iy worth alot more and less to the person looking for original machines,and as with most hobbies its a labour of love,you wont get rich restoring a tractor and reselling it,but for most of us its the pleasure of fixing up an old machine,which it sounds like you are no stranger too,so welcome and have fun with that nice peice of history

It's only original once! That ones to "original" to mess with. Clean it up a little and keep it as is :thumbs:

Like mentioned above, 502's are not rare, but are not found very often....especially in nice original condition. Look at the nice condition of that original paint! It is way too nice to restore. I would NOT restore that tractor.......get it functionable & maybe clean it up some & preserve it from there. They are only original one time & I only like to buy unmolested original tractors. I would also be interested in that tractor too. Thanks for sharing!
