Still looking for an original Commando 8 seat

Recommended Posts

rmaynard

I am still trying to find a seat for my Commando 8. With only 27 days left until the big show, this is the only thing left that I have not found. As long as the pans are not rusted out, I can get upholstery done quickly. PM me if you have something. Thanks!

I wonder what it is about these seats that makes them so hard to come by? :scratchead:

They are made up of a base pan and two cushions. The base pans tend to rust out pretty bad. Don't know if it was bad steel or just bad painting. The one that I have, rusted where the pan bends up to form the back rest. The original owner tried to repair it, but his repair failed as well, so he made a back out of plywood and "L" brackets. My bottom cushion is in fairly good shape, but the back cushion is missing.

I remember when are family had a dealership we would get alot of those seats back soon after the sale. The problem was they would trap water and like a car would start rusting from the inside out super early in the tractors life. Good luck finding one. There is probably a good one out there somewhere. Just going to take time.

Yeah, I need one too. The entire metal pan is rusted, simple enough to repair, but I need NOS cushions. I have a couple tears on the edges. I would get it re-upholstered, but I want to preserve the WH stamping.

It seems like one could make a lot of money by making repros with the stamping.

Seems like it must have been pretty difficult/costly to manufacture these stamped covers.

I wonder how the :wh: pattern was transferred into the vinyl anyway.

Sounds like a great idea for TV's "How It's Made" to feature.

Oh I agree. I loved that show. I'm thinking heat would have been involved, maybe hot metal stamp branding the material? :eusa-think:

I just had a 67 Ranger seat cover made by a friend at work. She normally does boat upholstery. She did a very nice job of matching the white center panel with the black vinyl. I'm wrapping up the restoration of the rusted to h.. seat pan and when I get it done and the cover installed I'll post pictures.

I've been toying with the idea of having her make a bunch of these to replace the original two piece seat in all black and some in the two color combination. Do you guys think there is a market for them?

Please post a picture of your Commando 8 in the " Wheel Horse Picture Gallery" . There are none of the 1968 thru 1972 Wheel Horse Models shown.

I cannot post a pic because I am on phone and have not figured out how to do that yet lol. I can email it. Send me an email to rooster@cutlooseracing.com Only option I have lol. I did manage to get it posted to my google if anyone has that lol.

There are 2 models of the 2-piece seat... a low-back and high-back. My '70 Charger 12 has the high back, but the back portion has been re-covered in the past, so I don't have the WH logo either... :(

Hey Bob. What do you think of these?

Commando8SeatCover.jpg67RangerSeatCover.jpg

First one is a new cover for the Commando. Second is a cover for the 67 Ranger. I need to steam them a little to fit the pan better and use a thinner foam but I think they will work out okay. I'm thinking of doing another all black only using the tufted black (like the white) for the center.

Wow, they look great! I just got a seat pan in the mail today. One of them would work great on that.

I'm bringing them to the show for people to take a look at them and offer suggestions for any modifications. Make sure to stop by and take a look. if I get good response and people are interested in buying them, I'm planning on having more made. I should have an idea of the price range by that time.
