B-82 3-Speed Transmission Troubles

Recommended Posts

Imrala

Hey all,

I recently purchased a B-82 from a neighbor who took great care of it, however the transmission (trans-axle) has gone dead on me after only about 5 mows. I was in the middle of mowing and I shifted and it started clicking and jostling the whole machine, almost like it was skipping a gear or couldn't quite get into position. I tried shifting it around some more and no matter what gear it was in I got the same result. After a few tries now it just does nothing, doesn't move. Everything else is in good condition so it would be a shame to have to buy a new mower so soon after purchasing this one but I can't seem to find parts anywhere. I'm probably going to take the trans apart and see if there's anything obviously wrong with it but I'm no transmission expert.

If anyone has an extra lying around that works I would be happy to buy it off of you, at a reasonable price of course. Besides that I would appreciate any help here pointing me in the right direction.

Here's the part i'm talking about: http://www.rcpw.com/lookup/?search.x=51&search.y=7&search=Search#/Toro_Consumer/02-08BP03%2c_B-82_3-Speed_Tractor%2c_1981/3-SPEED_TRANSMISSION/02-08BP03-49-1981/810219R2-19R20004-0001

Thanks!

Also, just want to say I'm pleasantly surprised to find such a large community around these machines! Gives me all the more confidence in my purchase!

I have one of those Trans-axles, however, they are not tough to find, they were used quite a bit in many different mowers/tractors.

They are Peerless model 600's, the gearbox is the same in all of them, the only real differences ore the axles and axle housings and the shifter.

If you can find one locally, it would really cost alot to get one shipped from me to you. Swapping over your axle's and tubes and shifter would not be tough.

BTW - From the sound of what your describing you have either broken a gear or shift rail, either way it is major damage. It most likely can be fixed, but would be easier to just replace it.

Compared to a WH transaxle, the 600 is a light weight! However, for the light weight mower trans-axles the 600 is one of the stoutest , it takes some pretty seriouse abuse to hurt one like that!
