Questions about a Commando 6

Commando 6-2

This is probably one of the craziest stories you wil ever hear but it is the truth. My cousin was actually getting some parts for my uncles truck at an auto salvage yard that takes metals in for scrap. While my cousin was working out there someone brought a load of scrap metal in and on the truck was this little tractor, he was not sure of what kind at the time but new it looked pretty nice and he just liked the way it looked. He tried to buy it off the scrappers but they didn't want no part of him so he went the the guy in charge of the yard and ask what he wanted for the little tractor and the guy told him $110,so he bought it and took it home. He called me because he knew I was into tractors and such and asked me to look at it and I told him I thought he had found a nice little tractor that was probably worth a few bucks. Well, to make a long story short he got it running and decided he didn't need it so he called me and I bought it for $300. It has the mowing deck that works pretty good and from what I have found on this little tractor it is all original( except the John Deere seat). It is a Wheel Horse Commando 6 with the original 6 horse tehcumseh, everything seems to work but I was wondering what went in the front of the grill? I thought lights at first but am not sure. Also, do they have some kind of bottom plow that went on the rear or what is the drop hitch for? This is my first Wheel Horse and I am excited to own it, I really want to find a rj58, but this will do. Thanks for and help,Jeff

:WRS: The hole in the front is covered by an escutcheon plate, which is still available from Toro for about $20.00. I'm not sure what all the accessories are than can be attached to the slot hitch, but I'm sure someone will fill in the blanks.

Glad to have you aboard. :wwp:

Looks like a 1965 655 that I have. Yours looks really good though and nice find. The scrap yard is a great place to find things if they will sell and I would have no idea why some of them won't. The yard I deal with most doesn't hesitate and they put them up front where you don't have to hunt the yard for them.

Thanks guys and the seat is going to be replaced with the original if I can find it. I don't understand why anyone would want to scrap something like this. Just stupid people in the world I guess.

My guess as to why they would scrap it, is that they stole it. There has been a lot of that going on around here. They stole an old Snapper lawn mower out of my dad's garage, some metal chairs, a metal table and other metal items.

Anything is possible but my cousin said he knew the people and from what he heard they where cleaning out this guy's grandfathers barn after he passed. Sad thing is that the grandfather was probably saving it for a younger family member to find and restore or just tinker with some day.
