wheel horse b-80 8speed transmission need part. Help..

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I am new to the site. Been a hit miss engine collector and wanted a wheel horse as a ride at engine shows. I am from the middle of NC. I finally picked up a 8 speed B-80 from the seventies. It needs paint but is pretty solid. My son is excited. He is seven and looks forward to riding it at an upcoming show in a month or so.

Anyway, got it to running and had trouble shifting the hi lo shifter. It's got four gears and a hi lo shifter making it an 8 speed. It would not go into hi. then it would not go into either. Finally it locked in hi range. I pulled the rear end and split the transmission. Sure enough gears are not perfect and have wear but are definitely usable and good, but the problem was the collar or shifter is broke that slides the gear back and forth on the hi lo range. It's a thin flat piece of metal that goes around a rod and back to shifter on top. I just got tranny split late last night so I don't have the broke part out yet. I gotta slowly take out those gears and make notes so I can gettem back in right..... Not something to do at midnight.....

I considered weld but it has to fit flat in there looks like and weld would build up on sides if I made it a strong bead. I might could get a flat piece of metal and fabricate???? and weld? It would be real nice if someone had one of these around they were willing to sell. The hub was stuck fast! I mean stuck... It broke trying to pull it. I have acquired a spare hub. But need this shifter piece....

If anyone has any advice or that shifter piece spare they would sell.... I would be extremely grateful. I and my boy would like to get it going before the engine show and maybe enter a lawn mower pulll there just for fun. It's geared way low for pulling.. This is my first wheel horse but I feel it won't be my last....

Thanks, Jamie

Jamie,

First, :WRS: Hope you enjoy your stay here!

Before you get too far on this thing, there's a transmission repair manual in our Files section that you'll probably find very useful. I would have to look up which section of that manual deals with your particular transmission, maybe somebody else knows off the top of their head?

There's also been several good threads on transmission rebuilds here over the years, some with really nice videos. Here's a few of my favorites:

Good luck!

Jamie...like Ed said...those threads he posted will assist you in all of your transmission endeavors. That piece can be welded and fixed or send a PM to racinfool40 (Mike)...he probably has the piece you want. :)
