Hydro Foot Pedal finally installed

Recommended Posts

zieg72

This mattd860 hydro foot pedal kit is top notch. It took more time to remove the column control than it did to install everything. I am very pleased with the outcome and it is even nicer than the original design on my 92. I cut about 1/3 acre before the skies got real threatening. There was no modifications needed to the 1997 foot pans. All in all I am very pleased with my purchase.

Thanks guys. I really like it. It makes mowing a pleasure again. My 92 has the OEM reproduction 8-3900 from Doc in Kentucky which works very well. I like this much more. Thanks Matt for a superb kit!!!

You will love it, especially going around trees when you are leaning to the side. For me I can't say enough. For those local to me want to check it out just let me know. I also hope to have it at Scott's Meet and Greet in the fall.

Is anyone bring a tractor with this set up to the WH show in PA in June!?!

So far, the consule mounted lever on my 88 520-H is very easy to use and usally just put in in foward and use the thigh muscle to nudge it foward as the right hand might have a beverage in it!

You know I don't have the experience with the various models some of the members have had but last year(at the big show) I tested an '88 520 with the longer console mounted lever and loved it!!! I honestly don't know why they went away from that. (short strokes from the steering wheel column have always made for a jerky ride for me, I have owned 4 Hydros all with steering colum mounts and while I have never had a problem with any of them...the longer length of the motion stick in my opinion made for smoother motion control. The feature with Matt's system as I understand it is the motion lever when engaged in the forward position returns to neutral if you take your foot off the pedal. Hopefully that adjustment can allow for some feathering. I have my seat safety switch disconnected because of a ditch I have to mow. Knowing that if I fall off or some other thing happens to me or the tractor that it will come to rest which would not happen as it is now, gives me some further peace of mind. :twocents-02cents:

I think that the trend was towards a "uncluttered" console, perhaps there was a lawsuit/litigation driven fear of a motion control "bumped" by a leg etc so, they put everything on the dash. before I got my 88 520-H I didnt even realize that they had moved everything to the dash circa 1990!!

83900 was the Wheel Horse part #. Doc in Kentucky made exact reproduction and I have one on my 1992 520H. It does not have provisions to automatically return to neutral if you let off the pedal. I retained the stock column speed control and use both. I have it adjusted so I have to reverse using the column speed control because I didn't want to loose the neutral safety switch.

FYI - I believe the auto-centering mechanism can be installed with the factory Wheel Horse foot pedal without any modifications. This will allow the factory designed pedal to return to center automatically. I'm not 100% sure it will work because I have never seen the factory kit in person but I've seen it in pictures and I'm 99% sure it will work.

Mine, for reference.

Matt, i'd be interested in modding this factory kit to a return to neutral like your offering does.

If you could help me out, I'd much appreciate it.

I have one of Matts kits and just love it! He was in contact with me on selling them and after getting it installed I personally think it's the way to go! Here are the pics of my 520 project with one of Matts pedals installed.

Hydro

Just wanted to update this post to say Matt shipped me his Foot Pedal Mod and I have it installed now. Like Zieg 72 it took me as long to remove the hand control as it did to install the kit. Matt's design really works well. I love the return to N E U T R A L ! I spent part of last night in the driveway doing figure 8's forward and reverse. Can't get over how fluid (pardon the pun) the Hydro has become. Much smoother to operate than before.

I highly recommend this modification for anyone thinking about it.

Any one that is going to the Charlotte show this weekend and wants to see one in person, I will have a 520 there with Matt's pedal setup there. Just ask for me and you can try it out.
