TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #5 Posted July 12, 2008 A little bit of progress was made on the K-161 today. There are quite a few pictures, but there are a lot of missing ones too. (dirty hands and cameras aren't the best combination.) Since I have parts and pieces laying around all over the place, some of the time was spent sorting through them and finding the best (and correct) ones for reassembly. Cleaning all the parts wipes out a lot of time too, so I feel we made good progress for the 4 or 5 hours spent on the job. 3 stone glaze breaker hone and some Liquid Wrench "cutting oil" at work: Scuffed cylinder ready for cleaning: Hobie scrubbing the block: Cleaned, dried, and ready for reassembly (cam was not removed): Timing marks aligned? -- "check" : Drawing up the bearing plate: Flywheel-side seal installed: PTO-side seal installed: Checking the ring end gap: Piston and rod assembly installed and cap bolts torqued (locks not bent yet): Lapping the valves: Using white grease to hold the locks to the valve stem for easier installation: Valves done and reinstalled: Showing correct orientation of inner breather plate: Carb, magneto, and cylinder head installed: We have some more work ahead of us, but the biggest part is done. I'm pretty sure Nick knows that too -- 'cause more than a few things have "backfired on him" in the past. TT-(Moderator) 1,131 #14 Posted July 20, 2008 Just as a follow up to the progress on this engine, the fuel pump and air cleaner have been installed, but since I upgraded this engine to the newer style magneto, I either need to fix the blower housing mounting holes, or find a replacement. The old style magnetos with the magnet rotor mounted directly to the crankshaft (under the flywheel) use a slightly smaller bearing plate, flywheel, and blower housing. I plan on welding up the blower housing soon, so with a little fuel and a lot of luck, we should have "fire in the hole" by the end of this week!
