1045 long frame diesel

Recommended Posts

Now that I'm not employed, I have time to work on stuff. It's amazing just how much you can get done, even with a little time. Before I wouldn't get home till dark, and no lights/power in the tent in less I run the extension cord.

Anyways, started on this last summer I think. Bought a 1045 with no motor. Frame was toast, hood was bent bad, but the rest was decent. I parted out the 520, kept the frame and some small stuff of it. I bought a complete 1276 over the summer, frame was junk on that, didn't want the hydro, rear fenders were hacked, had a "furry" seat, (was comfy tho) so really ended up using just the hood and front axle.

I took the frame from the 520, bolted up an 8-speed, used the 1276 front axle and hood, used the 1045 dash tower, fenders/toolbox/seat, and the 10 horse diesel that was on the 520.

I had to raise the hood to clear the diesel, buddy is bending a plate that will raise the dash and steering wheel. It will bolt on to the 1045 tower, then bolt dash onto it. Not gonna cut or modify any of the 1045 stuff, since they are little hard to come by. Actually will have to drill a hole for the low range lever to go thru.

Once the plate gets bolted on, really only need a belt to get it to roll under it's own power. But still need to get brakes, probly should do that first. I doubt I'll paint it pretty, really depends how much is going on this summer. I plan on not working, just enjoying "unenjoyment" every week. Not in less something good comes along. Daughter steered while I pushed....

Thanks for the kind words. B) Just about everytime I go outside to work on them, my daughter asks if she can have a tractor ride. At my mother's where I keep my 4 wheelers, it's the same there, always wants to go for a ride. She always wants to ride the fast one, not the slow one that rides nice and has more room.

Still have a bunch of small stuff to do, but shouldn't (hopefully) be too long. I'm really anxious to see what this diesel does with a gear tranny. When it was on the 520 with the hydro, hard to get the feel of the power that it had. It should be sick, the lawn ranger with the 13 horse was crazy, I never heard that motor work hard.

Really nice! I love the tall stack. I am considering doing something similar to mine.

Kinda curious if it maybe needs to be braced so it doesn't flex to much and break something.

I have a similar tent. I hung a couple of shop lights from the frame and power them with an extension cord through a light switch. Works well as they don't draw a lot of current.

Can't wait to see the pics of the finished product.

I didn't put a brace on it, but probly wouldn't be a bad idea to use one. I made a flange then welded a piece of pipe to it. It's a 1/4" flange, and the pipe goes thru it, so it's pretty solid. I need to modify it a little, once I get that done I'll build a brace for it.

The tent is better than nothing, keeps most of the rain and weather out. But really needs to be bolted to the ground. The wind can really get rippin, and most of the tabs and mounting points are ripped out. I think the 4 6 tires holding the tarp over the roof is the only thing keeping it from blowing away....

Yeah, the tents can blow away if you don't hold them down. I have a couple of decks hanging from the side frame inside of mine. It's a good way to keep things off of the floor, and adds some weight to keep it from blowing away.

You might want to consider running a bracing cable or two across it (if you can get it high enough so that it is out of the way) under tension so that the sides don't bow out from the weight of winter snow. I've had several friends loose their planes when the snow collapsed the shelters on top of them. I'm sure that up your way, you get a lot more snow than I.

We lucked out this winter and didn't get a foot total I don't think. I don't know how long I'll be keeping it. It's a PITA when it's windy, not gonna hold up to heavy snow anymore, but just closed out my storage unit that I used to keep stuff, so now this and my mother's is the only place to keep stuff. I have alot up there already, don't want to bring anymore up there. Hoping this will hold together till I figure out what to do with it all.

Hoping to get the lawn ranger back together this weekend. Then I'll have 4 running tractors!!! And don't need one!!!! But it's better than sitting inside on the couch....

Hey Joe looks awesome! Glad to see you've gotten back into the groove. Fun for the family too! I think you need to figure out a test for that diesel and video it for us all to see. :flags-canada:

I know a lot of folks wedge 2X4's under the center joist (I have no idea what you really call it) whenever snow is in the forecast. I've never had to mine that since my hanger is one of the heavier duty tents. But I've seen it done, and think I'll probably do that next winter.

Also, sometimes, the weight of the snow can pull the canvas cover over the ends. Had that happen a few times. Good to knock the snow off of them as often as possible.

If the weather ever decides to get better, I'll be out there getting done what I can. I'm anxious to see what it will do. There is a tree behind my tent that fell down last year....

Got a little more done today. Not pic worthy stuff done, just tedious stuff. Drilling the hold in the frame for the dash tower, one for the low range lever, mounted brake band I didn't even know I had, and then thought I was on the ball when I made some spacers to raise the dash. On the right track, just need some final adjustments.

I had to raise the hood couple inches to clear the diesel. Wanted something old to put the motor in, and something other than 3-4-500 series.

I've been working out of a silver tent for a couple of years now, Mine is on a concrete slab and i bolted it down with red heads(it aint goin nowhere) My tarp is needing replaced soon I have a split forming at one of the poles where the roof transitions to side, and the zipper is FUBAR on one side. Never had a problem with snow load it seems to just slip off, when it gets deep I have the step son go out and shake it off. I have a small radient gas bottle heater out there in the winter that heats it up nicely actually have to take the coat off and turn it down after about 30 minutes.
