millsies 0 #1 Posted April 23, 2012 Hi, I am going to look at a WH D-180 this weekend, it has a 38" deck and a plow. Fully serviced buy "his guy." From the photos it looks great. He is asking $1500 We would use it on a property with 1.5 acres, less than 1/4 of that is lawn so the 38" deck if perfectly fine for us. We would like to find a snow blower to do our 800' driveway which we use a '60 jeep for now but hate to have a vehicle just sit the rest of the year and be a home to mice... Are there any particular issues to look for on this machine? What to you folks think of the price, we plan to offer somewhat less of course THANKS Millsie
bobert94 38 #2 Posted April 23, 2012 Hi & welcome to red square. These tractors are very heavy duty I have one and just love it. But would not be my choice if it was to be the only tractor i owned. Steering is somewhat clumsy and the hydro units are less than perfect. parts are somewhat hard to find you simply cant run down to your local dealer and get any part you might need. But thay are a blast to plow snow with. You might be better off looking for a newer model 520 1991- 1997 as thay are much more user friendly.
1maidenfan 202 #3 Posted April 23, 2012 I'm wondering where / how they got a 38" deck to fit a D series? Normal is 48" and you can adapt others to fit, but 38"? Seems kinda small for a D180. I have three D series and want a 4th, with only a mower deck (38" at that) the price sounds way high. P.S. The parts are kinda hard to come by. Good luck with it and... :WRS:
Hodge71 664 #4 Posted April 23, 2012 :WRS: Millsie. As the others have stated, this is a big tractor it might be close to 1000 pounds. Parts are definitely hard to come by and I feel the same as Maidenfan...38 inch deck... Never was a 38" deck on any horse that I know of. 36 and 37 but no 38 unless it was a 200 series machine at that. Youre saying that you only have 1/4 of 1.5 acres which wold be about 2/3 of an acre of grass. I would say you only need a C series or 3 or 4 series tractor, with a displacement of 10, 12 , 14 , or 16 horsepower if you find it at the right price. A D-180 with only a mower deck unless it is in absolutely pristine factory condition isn't worth $1500. You can pick up a great smaller C, 3 or 4 series tractor for less than half that with a 42" or 48" mowing deck and it will be more than up to the task of handling anything you and your 2/3 of an acre can throw at it. Just as an example of how much work they do, My Dad has a 1973 12hp Automatic (C series) and he cuts an 1.25 acres every week plows a 300 fooot driveway in winter, tills a huge garden in spring and has since 1973 with no issues at all. And for 35 of those years he had the PTO driven lawn vaccum and 29 bushel trailer in tow. Good luck in your search. I hope you realize youre now infected with the sickness. 1maidenfan 202 #6 Posted April 23, 2012 P.S. A snow blower is one of the hardest impliment to find complete for the D series. Most time if you find one the 90* gear drive is missing, and good luck finding one of those. I agree with hodge71 a nice C series would suit you better and the impliments are earier (and cheaper) to find. :wh:
marvairplanes 34 #7 Posted April 23, 2012 Youre saying that you only have 1/4 of 1.5 acres which wold be about 2/3 of an acre of grass. . FAILING GRADE IN ARITHMETIC !!!!!! 1/4 of 1.5 acres is no where near 2/3 of an acre. Try 3/8 of an acre.
pfrederi 17,741 #8 Posted April 23, 2012 I would also vote for a a C series in you instance. The Ds are big and not exactly easy on fuel.

Sorry Mr airplanes, I made a mistake in my math..I'm not sure why I put 2/3 when my math showed me .375 which would be 3/8. Thank you for climbing down off your cross and walking on water to belittle me and show me the error of my ways . I"m glad that I got to meet The Savior as I'm sure I'm going to meet the once I pass on from this world. I can now die happy!!!
millsies 0 #10 Posted April 23, 2012 You guys have been great, thank you. With all the info we will probably pass on the tractor. The reason we are looking for a machine this size is that we plan on clearing more of our property, we will be dragging logs etc and would really like a small FEL. Right now we have a Honda 3813 which is a super little tractor. It's probably all about bigger toys : - ) We will keep looking M

JackC 617 #13 Posted April 23, 2012 I have a D-160. I only use it to push and pull my heavy docks around. It would not be my first choice for mowing. The steering is really loose and clumsy. I would prefer the jeep for plowing if it has a heater in it and cab on it. It would need to be in pristine condition to go for $1,500. There are many around for about $700 plus or minus. They usually had 48 inch decks. It sounds like a C series would be a better choice. A C-160, C-165, or C-175 would be good if you like the bigger Cs. The C-175 Automatic is my favorite because I like automatics and twin cylinder engines and it is strong enough to do most things I need done.
SAM58 30 #14 Posted April 25, 2012 Also, I have seen several with axle & bearing problems... If it will be your only tractor, I would go for a 300 - 500 series. 2 Cents :)
