any tips i should use to get it restored

one is to take ALOT of pictures,if you are gonna tear it down,they become your bible when you put her back together,take as many as you can,like throttle linkage,cable routing,wiring,the more the better

Series 2 are good motors but they are not designed to idle that slow. You will not have her long running that slow. Cooling an oil flow will be to small...SM for Kohler KTs specs idle speed at 1200 rpm +/- 75
