Ken B 3,164 #1 Posted April 6, 2012 On one of my RJ's while pushing the tractor in neutral it is almost like the tranny just pops into gear on its own and the tractor can't be pushed even though the shifter is still in neutral. Does anyone have any idea what can cause this before I tear into the diff? Thanks for any info!
buckrancher 2,694 #2 Posted April 6, 2012 could be a bent shifter fork or a broken piece binding up the gears
stevasaurus 22,867 #3 Posted April 6, 2012 Ken, looks like you are going in to that trans. Things it might be...the axles have roll pins...the shift forks have roll pins (little guys that could break)...maybe one of the detente balls is missing and/or the spring is messed up...if the 1533 ball bearing came apart, you could have 12 1/4" steel balls rolling around and getting stuck in the gears. Not sure I would start it and see what it sounds like...too easy to tear apart. I did rebuild videos of a 5003 trans in the transmission section last summer/fall...I will find if you want. Let us know. Here is the link Ken...you should be able to see what you think it is...
VinsRJ 723 #4 Posted April 6, 2012 Ken, U-B-Going in deep..... I've got extra gears and shafts if needed.
Ken B 3,164 #5 Posted April 6, 2012 I tore into it today, lots of stripped gears in there. It looks like it was taken apart at one time as it all came apart wicked easy, there was no gasket on the side cover, the diff. had no oil in it and all off the broken gear teeth are M.I.A. stevasaurus 22,867 #6 Posted April 6, 2012 Holy Cow...did you take any pictures. Did you just buy this? Maybe someone got rid of a bad trans.
Ken B 3,164 #7 Posted April 6, 2012 I just bought it but I knew that the tranny had a problem and I kind of expected it to not be an easy fix as I never get that lucky. The guy I bought it from bought it like this as well.
