Wheel Horse Differentials

Hello! To start with, I have two 1054s, both with junk differentials. After many years of plow work, our first 1054 ground all of the teeth off of gears in the diff. I recently bought the second one for parts only to discover it had the same issuse. Both have good gears and all in the rest of the axle, it's just the diffs that need fixing. We can't find any other 1054/953 axles anywhere. We have found a few other wheel horse axles, most noteably hydro units from later c series. Will the diffs in any other of the wheel horses fit in the 1054 transmission? Thanks for reading!

Not sure what you mean differentials need fixing! Are you talking about the bull gears and the axles? :scratchead:

Yes you can swap in an 8-pinion differential into the 953-1054 tranny...There was a thread showing how to do it but I can't seen to find it.. CharlesD-250 had a diagram on what had to be done..there is some clearance issue's with the Bull gear..Maybe some one else will come along and remember what I'm talking about..And yes the bevel gears are getting extremely hard to find..I sold my last set to a fellow member here and have a 1054 tranny here that I rebuilt for another member..

So if anyone can find that thread that had the diagram Please forward it..MIKE

I havent done a 953/1054 but I'm in the process of swapping the bevel gear differential in a 1276 hydro to an 8 pinion, so I think I can give you enough information to get started.

There is a difference in widths of the bull gears between the bevel diff and the 8 pinion.

(8 pinion is the wider one). The longer teeth will interfere with the bottom of the teeth on the pinion shaft, so you will need to grind about a 3/16 bevel on the edge of the teeth to provide clearance.

So, in a nutshell, I think that you can use an 8 pinion diff with its matching bullgear (modified), your old pinion shaft, and (I think) your old axles. Are 953/1054 axles the same length side to side? I have heard that you may need to have a groove machined in the axles for a circlip instead of the roll pin in the end, but I am not sure that this is necessary.

Thanks everyone. I've been sent that thread before, and I has been a great help. What exactly is an 8 pinion differential and where can I find one?

An "8 pinion differential" refers to the number of pinion gears in the differential.

Since about the early '70's almost all Wheel Horses have used either a 4 pinion or 8 pinion differential. I'm thinking there are a few models of 1 1/8" axle transmissions that used a 4 pinion diff, but most used the 8 pinion.

The 8 pinion is regarded as the most heavy duty rear end available, but the 4 pinion diffs are still pretty stout, and are more heavy duty than the spider gear diff that you have just blown apart, or the 10 pinion limited slip diff that was around in the the late 60's.
