Hydro Refill And Vent

Recommended Posts

Moparfanforever

Hey Guys , I am changing the filter/oil in my GT 1848 and was reading on how to vent the trans. by removing the bolt for the fender pan or running a small hose thru the funnel , and was wondering , can you just let it vent thru the oil filter housing ??? It was releasing air thru it as it was draining.

The fender pan bolt is kinda tricky to get , and mine has a clamp on it for the fuel line making it harder to get to.

And will the trans./hydro lift bleed itself by using them or do you have to bleed it by loosening a line or something ???

Thanks ,

Darrell

Just changed the oil in my C-141 this past weekend. It ended up taking me over 1/2 hour to refill. Fortunately I had beer and good company in the garage so it wasn't too bad.

Same here a couple of weeks ago with my 417-A. A RS member has told me since then you can leave the filter a little loose till the fluid is in, then tighten and you are done. Check the dipstick of course.

Little trick for me was to just let the oil sit in the sun and get good and warm and just sort of eek it in a little at a time. The oil being a little thinner and runnier helps I think. I didn't want to deal with the pita of removing more bolts than necessary...

On the Eaton 11 (or maybe it's the 1100) transaxle, you can crack the oil filter loose and the tranny will easily fill. Been down that road with trying to fill the hydro and taking a LOOOOOONG time.

Good luck,

Bill

I just drained the 520-H and changed out the filter but I can only get 3 1/2 qts into it. It's a 1988 so I have the hydro disengauged and pushed it around so now the level is now below the funnel I was using but its still at the top of the filler tube. just leaving it until tommorow

I didnt 'vent' the filter since it was going in and just taking its sweet time but then at 3 1/2 it stopped glugging and stopped filling. Should vent the filter? or siphion off oil until the dipstick reads ok, then run it and check and add oil? should take 5 qts!

One of mine when I filled it, only took about 4 qts then stopped, I started it for a few min. ran the lift up and down, shut it off let it set then topped it off, took 99% of 5qts, remember the filter will hold darn near 1/2 qt.

Thanks Kelly! I left it alone tonight as I had to pull the rear wheel to get the gorilla applied filter off and will try the advice!

after following Kellys advice, I started the 520 up and ran it around and actuated the lift up and down and then after letting her cool down for 3 hrs, I checked the trans oil level and now its dead in the middle of the dipstick (not me) and I still didnt add any oil since last night so, to recap, she is at 3.5 qts when she should be at 5 qts. oh, its the OEM Toro/wheel Horse filter. stupid me, I didnt measure how much drained out since I was changing the engine oil also. I will keep an eye on the levels. any thoughts, anyone?

I used to fill my tractor's tranny (Eaton 1100) and it took a ton of time and made for a mess. Now I crack the filter open a bit and fill it up in a few minutes. Cracking open the filter gives the trapped air a vent to get out from the tranny.

Good luck,

Bill

Don,

My brother's C145 Auto called for 5 qts and it will only hold 4 1/2 qts on an oil change. We ran it around the yard, used the hydro lift, it still shows right on the full mark. There is oil in the lines going to the hydro lift that won't drain out (I'm guessing) unless you take the lines loose going to the lift cylinder.
