High temp paint?

Recommended Posts

Paul D.

So I am looking at repainting my horse (C-141) It has some surface rust and I would like to get it under control before it goes to far. I still have the original exhaust on my tractor and would like to keep it original. It's a worker and I don't want to risk breaking my engine block by hitting a branch with a stack. Is there any paint that is better than the rest for resisting the heat put off by the exhaust? Has anyone ever put a heat shield around a stock exhaust to keep the heat away from the front of the hood? I just really don't want to paint it only to have the paint peeling off in a year because it is getting to hot. I am planning on taking it down to bare metal prior to painting.

Any input is greatly appreciated!!photo-1-1.jpg

There was a thread that I started back in 2010 about heat shield tape. This might work for you.

Any automotive store carries high temp paint as well, in several different colors. From what I've seen, gloss tends to hold up better than flat on an exhaust. I painted my 310-8 Magnum with it years ago, and none has come off.

I always intended to put a heat shield on this muffler to protect the paint and the decal from the heat:

But I never found my round tuit, so it never got done. In about 3 years there's no sign of discoloration or heat damage, and the hood is only 1/2" away from the muffler at its closest point. BTW the paint is Valspar Restoration Series (with hardener).

My exaust is close to the hood on my B-80, but I haven't had a problem with my paint, its just an industrial enamel with plenty of hardener. As far as the exaust goes, I use VHT flame proof header paint in a rattle can. This paint holds up better than any other exaust paint I've found.:twocents-02cents:

Flat black BBQ grill paint is an option that holds up well too Paul.

I like the duplicolor VHT also goes on real nice, the color changes a bit as it bakes out on the muffler but it works well for rattle can, If it begins to rust a bit it is easy reapply for a touch up. I will sandblast the muffler first though
