before i get started tearing into it here is my question, i will be removing a 1972 8 horse briggs vert. and replacing w/a 1980 or so 12 horse. will the old drive pulley go on the newer engine? and will the shaft length be the same?

Its completly possible... but all engine manufactures had several different diameter and lengths for the cranks. Only thing you can do is pull the old motor and match it up with the new engine. You may also be able to buy the correct oulley setup to match the new engine.
