Paint removal

I'm having a hard time trying to remove the old paint off of my horse. I've been using aware wheel on grinder for the bigger things such as the rearend and some panels. What's the best way to remove paint that's been baked onto the fenders for 30 years. Can I use aircraft paint remover? Is it safe for my seals and motor components?

I would not get anything like that on my seals, axle seals, brake hub seal, input shaft seal, or engine seals. You could probably use it on the sheet metal, and just use a wire wheel on the sensitive areas, or a sandblaster but you would still have to be careful around the seals. :thumbs:

I tried something new to me on my 520 project witch worked very nice with very little odor and wasn't flammable. Zip strip in a yellow can. I got it from my local hardware and I have to say for me it worked very well. I rinsed it off with plain water and it didn't heart the rubber floor mats at all, so I would think the seals would be ok, Also I did get some on a plastic piece and it was fine. I will use this product again for sure. I would sand blast if I had a LARGE compressor that could keep up with a pressure pot blaster, but $3500 for the screw compressor is not in any budget for a long while E tank works great also, but not in the winter as you don't want it inside when in use. I did pay $50 to have the hood blasted as it had a lot of rust, but my 875 cost me $225 to have the sheet metal blasted, Thats a lot of $ to remove paint and rust, so this time I used stripper, wire wheel for rust, rust convertor, And I am happy with it for a worker!

A sandblaster is by far the best tool investment we have made yet i have yet to have it remove any type of paint.

I took all my sheet metal to a local sandblaster and he charged $75 to do it, both sides. Saved a lot of work, it was pretty rusty. Another one I called wanted $125 but he would powder coat it also. I may do that next time.

It was made by loctite and came in a rattle can spray, Needed to dry for 24 hours and neutralizes rust and makes it a printable surface. I have used it before with very good success. My tractors will never be left out side to be exposed to the weather, and I don't do full restores on workers.

i agree that sand blasting is good but i also agree that you need a hell of a compressor,i rented a large gas powered comp with a twin 16hp honda and it couldnt keep up to my blaster,so i use disks to get the bulk off,then blast to get rid of the sanding marks
