Some of you will probably have worked this out already.

Problem

In the UK (at least) WD40 can be bought bulk, and used through a 'squirt' can,

or as a standard aerosol (with the stupid straw you keep losing)

or if you want to splash the cash, the aerosol with the "smart straw". (more control, but expensive- relative to the standard aerosol version)

Solution

Buy one "smart straw" can, when its empty carefully take the top off, it will replace the standard can nozzle, so you can buy the cheaper cans.

Well THAT'S clever!

I do like the Smart Straw cans, but they are expensive. I never thought to try taking the top off -- does it just pull off, is there anything special we need to know to be able to remove it?

I've been doing this for ever, I thought everyone did it, I also buy WD in the gal. and mix it in my squirt bottle with ATF so it says put a little better.

ive been using the atf(used from hydro change but still looks new)and acetone,i got a gallon for 25 bucks,so ill get 2 gallons of penetrting oil for 25 bucks,the tranny fluid is free,i allready used it in the tractor so it goes to a good cause,and put it in a spray bottle,seems to work good

got a just about empty can of WD with the smart top on it now. il have to try that. and i have about 4 gal of new trans fluid sitting around that i have no use for. now i do .

i recently got ahold of this stuff called fluid film. i really like it. spays out thick and also works great.

Me too, the shop I work in buys the "smart straw" cans for the mechanics on the floor. I grab the straws when the cans go into the Hazmat bin. I have a dozen or so of them in my toolbox at home. I have tried these on quite a few other cans with some success. Love these straws.

I buy it in Gal form and put it in industrial spray bottles, A lot cheaper that way and works great! I like to buy in bulk and I haven't needed to buy more in over 3 years. still have 1/4 gal left. Never tried adding atf yet, I know atf is real hard to get off steal when you are trying to paint it. It soaks into every crack and crevice and doen't want to come out with brake cleaner or lacquer thinner. So it should work real good! I use atf for drilling holes in thick steel as a drill bit lube, It works great, but is hard to clean off. I thought i had it all clean before I welded on the first round of hitches I built, But as the steal got hot, it would sweat out more atf out of the pores of the steal and cause the weld to look like bird turds, So I will try it for a penetrating oil

yep they just pry off, I just use a blade/screwdriver. Done carefully and looked after, I would think it would last.
