A new one to the herd, 416-8 with onan

Hi all,

Today they delivered my new horse for the collection, a 416-8 with onan P216G. It's in almost new condition with only small rust on floorboards. Further than that almost looks like it came from the store as a new one. It gets even better cause the engine only has 180 hours on it!!!

BUT there is also a downside on it. As it came from a wheelhorse dealer in the past they took of the intake, carb, airfilter and starter motor to use on an other one that had to be fixed for a customer. It also misses the front screen and some bolts here and there on the engine. Also no idler pulley on the clutch assembly and 3 red lenses are missing on the control panel.

I do have acces to an 18 hp onan that came from a 518H but I don't know if parts are interchangeable. Someone of you out there has to confirm it for me please! Should carb and intake, etc. from a P218G work on mine P216G? Please help.

Also there is no oil filter on the engine and it doesn't seem there ever been one there as there is a bolt. It does have a rubber round flap that covers the side of the engine shroud wich says oil filter. Strange...does it need an oil filter?

Engine has real 180 hours on it and has tons of compression when turned by hand. I'm pretty sure there is no internal damage. Hope to get her running soon.

I also need to find an online manual an parts viewer for the engine and tractor it self. Could someone help me with this? Here the numbers.

I've got a 1995 520H roller / NO ENGINE so I have to pull it around too HAHA

Good luck with your project 520. I hope you can get it running without alot of expense. I will probably repower mine with a Kohler engine of some kind.

Thanks for all the nice comments! Does anyone could send me the online manual and parts viewer as I can't figure it out? I took the engine of last night and I'm cleaning it a bit up and see what I'm missing.

nice tractor. i have a 516 with no oilfilter, i bought all the parts to install one but havent done so yet, i am going to post the info on the engines forum now so it can be moved to most usefull posts, my triumph dealer in the 80s also had to canibalize bikes to get coustimers back riding. again nice tractor & good luck ,try welding machines for missing parts jay holt

First of all Craig thank you for sending me the engine manuals and links via PM! I appreciate!

Today I took apart the engine good enough to clean it all up from the little grease that was on it. It seems there is no oil filter needed on this engine.

I'll be looking for a gasket kit for this engine as I'll have to take of the heads for further inspection and clean up from the valves. I need to buy a new condensor as the cable broke of.

I also found out that there is no starter motor on the engine anymore. Oh well it's coming along...

Does anyone know if parts from a P218G onan with oil filter from a 518H are interchangeable with mine P216G? Please help me.

Could someone please help me to find the parts viewer for the tractor? I know you can find it on Partstree but I can't figure out how to search on it with my number of the tractor. I still don't know the year.

Here is a parts manual for several Onans including the P series.

The 16, 18, and 20 hp motors share most of the same parts.

The differences are primarily in the carburetor, crank, and rods.

HELLO WHRAIDER10, NICE TRACTOR. I HAVE ONE LIKE THAT BUT MY MODEL NUMBER STARTS WITH 31-XXXXXXXX AND YOURS IS A R1-XXXXXXX. I HAVE NEVER SEEN A WHEEL HORSE ONAN WITHOUT A OIL FILTER. I LOOKED INTO IT ON SOME SPEC SHEETS AND SHOWS YOURS TO BE A 316-8,BUT YOUR TRACTOR IS DECAL 416-8. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE I SEE IS THE 4 PINION REAREND IN THE 316. I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND WHEEL HORSE AND MODEL NUMBERS. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROJECT.

Bowtie, thanks for the comment and info on my tractor. Where did you find that mine should be a 316-8? If I look on redsquare "1984 present model list" I can't find any 416-8 wit Onan P216G-I/10957C. I'll take a look at the 316-8's.

HELLO, I WENT TO THE TORO PARTS LOOK UP. FOUND MODEL NUMBER WITH R1-XXXXXX. THE ENGINE ITSELF NEVER SHOWS UP ON ANY WH MODELS. MAYBE THAT'S THE REASON YOU DON'T HAVE A OIL FILTER WITH THAT ONAN 10957C. I CAN'T EXPLAIN THAT ENGINE UNLESS ONAN SUPPLIED WHAT THEY HAD AVAILABLE AT THAT TIME TO WHEEL HORSE. DOES IT HAVE THE ID TAG STAPLED TO THE OWNWERS MANUAL FOR THE ONAN THAT CAME WITH THE TRACTOR? I HAVE THAT SOME OF MY ONANS MANUALS.

I didn't get an manual with the tractor. I found the engine number on a sticker on the engine shroud. I've been looking on the "Redsquare 1984 model present list" and I found my ID number. Mine says R1160802 but it seems to be R1-160802. Now that would be a 1990 316-8 with Onan P216G-I/10976C. I don't see any difference between mine Onan P216G-I/10957C without oil filter.

Now make it a little more difficult: if the Onan P218G engine from a 518H for parts that I know for sale is a P218G-I/10539B I can use the carb from it. I'll email the guy to ask. If not I'll be looking in the States for parts.

Finally some progress on the engine numbers...but I'm getting crazy of them as I've to much numbers in my head right now.LOL

What??? If I look the model up on TORO parts viewer it says that the engine uses Carburetor NN10203 and if I look it up on Partstree it says carburetor NN10504(replaces NN10203).

Should both of these work fine?

from my understanding of onan i have 5 520's 1 18 hp and 6 p216, carbs will all bolt up physically, the 18 and 20 share carbs bore and stroke. the 16 and the 18 share cams.

if you look at the spec. in the manuals you can find this info. my guess the cab would work but would need leaned out. i have not tried this yet but 2 of the p216 and one of the p220 are at his time parts motors who knows what i may end up putting together

i cant find your engine specs on all years wheelhorse,i guess because you are from europe and the numbers are different,but it sounds like the 18 will give you the parts you need

Question,

On my 416-8 (aka 316-8) should there be a solenoid located on the engine mounting plate? There is no on my tractor and I guess they also took it of along with the starter motor. Does anyone has a 416-8 like mine? If so please post pics cause I need pics to see what other parts I might be missing.

HELLO, MY 1990 416-8 DOES NOT HAVE THE EXTRA SOLENOID,JUST THE ONE ON THE STARTER. THERE IS A EXTRA WIRE BY THE SOLENOID THAT IS NOT USED ON THE 416 IT WAS FOR THE 520. I have a 1989 416-8 that is similar, it has the extra solenoid, but also has an oil filter. It is model 31 - 16O801. I also have 520's and although I haven't tried swapping engine parts between them, everything looks identical and I think the 518 parts will be a bolt on. As Eric said, some carb tuning adjustment may be required.

The red dash lights were still available new last year, I got them from Toro through Jack's Small Engines in the US and they were only about $3.00 each with the rubber gasket.

Here are some photos of mine when I pulled it apart to clean it all up last year. When I put it back together I tried to bypass the extra solenoid but couldn't get power to the starter, hooked it all back up again and all worked fine.

Here are some pictures that may help. In the last one you can see the oil filter boss on the engine.

hi sorry i didn't get back to you sooner. i,ll try to get some pictures and figure out how to post,never done that before. as far as the solenoid the 88 and 89 onan used the solenoid down at the starter the 90 and newer onan's used a cube relay down under the battery depending on the year. they used 1 to 3 relays. these relay are fairly cheap and available and were used on a lot of makes of cars. anyway look for a little black cube with 4 terminal being used, i think there is 5 terminals on the relay but they only used 4. the only other thing i see missing is the voltage regulator, these are available over the internet. i personally buy any onan that i can find cheap dead or alive for parts if nothing else. unfortunately i don't find that many. oh well i'll see what i can do about the pictures but probably not before the weekend.
