whc160 74 #1 Posted February 21, 2012 Well this last summer Dad's C-160 was using oil. He does not use it any more in the winter so I decided to look into it. Found what a I thought was alot of carbon when I got the head off. Also the head gasket was blown. Then found the piston & cylinder were worn along with the valves. Martin I have a cub that has a 10hp & it does not have near the power my 16's do. But I don't now if it is just sick or there is that much difference. They seated the valves and de-carbon'ed the head. Machine shop cost me $260 and rebuild kit + extra parts another $250. Hope this gives you an idea of the cost for a total rebuild. Anglo Traction 761 #12 Posted February 27, 2012 Just to give you a comparison, it cost the equivilent of US$109 for a Rebore/Hone, Crank Regrind/Polish and Steam Clean/Oil coating on my K301 here in UK. rmaynard 15,514 #13 Posted February 27, 2012 I had my K-241 bored, honed, valves seated, and block totally bead blasted for $55.00. Crankshaft was turned for $50.00 which included shipping both ways to a shop 130 miles away. Parts were all aftermarket and included new piston, rings, connecting rod, valves, seals and gaskets, for $90.00. If you can accept that aftermarket parts will work as well as OEM, you can save a lot of money. I also shopped around for machine shops and used two different ones for the work. The block machining was $110, thats $30 to bore, $30 to grind valve seats, $20 to deck block, $20 to surface head, and $10 environmental fee. The engine kit I got from a guy on for 103.99, that included the piston, rod, new valves, gaskets, seals, points and spark plug. I also bought a new governor gear for $25. The engine kit was all stens parts. The governor gear was kohler. The guy's store on ebay is called The Man's One Stop Shop, he was very friendly and helpful, and he has kits for just about all kohlers. squonk 41,156 #20 Posted March 11, 2012 My 16 big block smoked like a pig when I got it. The tractor had sat a lot. Ran some Sea Foam in the the oil and it pretty much stopped. I use about 2 oz. of oil an hr. when mowing.I would like to rebuild it but it runs too good for me to tear it down. Plus it's my mower and snowplow machine. My hydro went out last spring but I was able to find a good hydro motor and got it going again. I'm getting a spare hydro rear this year. Maybe next year I can locate a 16 spare motor and have it redone to drop in and not be without my favorite tractor being available. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
