Sparky-(Admin) 21,300 #6 Posted February 11, 2012 I would start with a new or known to be good spark plug. They do go bad and thats the easiest thing to check first. I use an inline spark checker, dont like the plug on the block method myself. The inline checker is cheap to buy and real handy to have. Just a question, were you doing something to the tractor prior to the no spark issue, or just going out to start it up again? This may help you look in a particular direction. pfrederi 17,645 #8 Posted February 11, 2012 Agree with comments about new plug and a $4 tester from Harbor Freight. Lot cheaper than buying a new Mag if that is not the problem. Mike I agree with you but i couldnt find my plug tester. I had just installed a new plug a few days ago so I was confident that it was not sparking. Turns out it was a bad key switch ( dont ever clean an old key switch ) Cleaning must have dislodged some crud internally and shorted out the switch. This then backfed the coil and blew the ignition. 1 hour with the multi meter, a trip to the supply store (for a new coil) and she is back running. Thanks for jumping in to try to help out. Turns out that trying to clean the (suspect faulty) key switch shorted it out. Needed a new coil anyway due to mouse problem so didnt hurt too much to buy a new one. All is good again. Looking at my reply I guess it looks like I was being a wise but it was only my attempt at humor. I have refered to the "Coil" as a "Magneto" for years so "module" did not come to mind. While researching the new one it seemed to be refered to as the coil most frequently so that is the name I used. I would have used doohicky but I am sure that would have been met with ill response.
