kruzr 1 #1 Posted February 11, 2012 Kohler M16S Motor Turns over fine but has no spark. Does this motor have points? What items could be causing the motor to have no spark? Any help greatly appreciated. Steve
Sparky-(Admin) 21,300 #2 Posted February 11, 2012 No points. Electronic ignition on the Magnums. Mike........
kruzr 1 #3 Posted February 11, 2012 Thanks Mike. Is it safe to assume that my coil could be bad? If the motor is turning over and I have the "kill" wire disconnected and there is still no spark? Any additional input?
pfrederi 17,642 #4 Posted February 11, 2012 How are you testing for spark? A test light or just the plug laying on the block
kruzr 1 #5 Posted February 11, 2012 Laying the plug on the block
Sparky-(Admin) 21,300 #6 Posted February 11, 2012 I would start with a new or known to be good spark plug. They do go bad and thats the easiest thing to check first. I use an inline spark checker, dont like the plug on the block method myself. The inline checker is cheap to buy and real handy to have. dennist 139 #7 Posted February 11, 2012 Steve, If I am correct you have been doing some things to get the tractor back in shape? Just a question, were you doing something to the tractor prior to the no spark issue, or just going out to start it up again? This may help you look in a particular direction. pfrederi 17,642 #8 Posted February 11, 2012 Agree with comments about new plug and a $4 tester from Harbor Freight. Lot cheaper than buying a new Mag if that is not the problem. A new plug and tester will always be useful even if you do have to spring for the new mag.

Mike I agree with you but i couldnt find my plug tester. I had just installed a new plug a few days ago so I was confident that it was not sparking. Turns out it was a bad key switch ( dont ever clean an old key switch ) Cleaning must have dislodged some crud internally and shorted out the switch. This then backfed the coil and blew the ignition. 1 hour with the multi meter, a trip to the supply store (for a new coil) and she is back running. Thanks for jumping in to try to help out. Turns out that trying to clean the (suspect faulty) key switch shorted it out. Needed a new coil anyway due to mouse problem so didnt hurt too much to buy a new one. All is good again. kruzr 1 #14 Posted February 15, 2012 hey kruzr i wasnt meaning to sound contradictary just making sure it wasnt a k series I understand. Looking at my reply I guess it looks like I was being a wise but it was only my attempt at humor. I have refered to the "Coil" as a "Magneto" for years so "module" did not come to mind. While researching the new one it seemed to be refered to as the coil most frequently so that is the name I used. I would have used doohicky but I am sure that would have been met with ill response. Its all good. Tha horse is running! Just made a new cutting edge for the plow so all we need now is some snow to try it out on.
